2000 Silverado Transmission Fluid Change -- HELP!

Can someone tell me what I need to change the transmission fluid on my '00 Silverado? Do I need a pump? What is the part number for the filter? How do I change the fluid? Is there a plug? Do I have to drop the pan? where is the filter located?

 

I know this is a lot of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no plug. You will need to drop the pan. There is a crossmember located directly below if my memory serves me correctly making it difficult to remove the pan. The filter resides just above the pan and is accessible when the pan is dropped. Depending on your level of mechanical skill, you may want to take it to a reputalble shop to have done. Better yet, one that can flush the old fluid out and replace with new.

   what is that bolt for on the bottom of the pan? it looks like a drain plug?

My '99 has a plug on the bottom of the pan, in the front, left corner, inside a little depression in the pan.

  Thats exactly what I have? How would I get the fluid in the tranny after I drain it? Also could I change the filter without pulling the pan?

No problem.

 

You have to refill the tranny through the dipstick tube.  Using a funnel is advised.  It would be hard to pour fluid down that tiny tube.  

 

You have to remove the pan to change the filter.

awesome, where is the fluid dipstick located at? I really need to get a Hanes manual (if they make one for this truck yet)...

Haynes manual number 24066 is what you need.  :thumb:

 

My 5.3 tranny dipstick is on the passengers side of the engine, back near the firewall.  It has a red flip-lock thingy for the handle.  I think it's even labled "Trans fluid" or something like that.  

 

You can see it in this pic.  Back near the firewall, next to the two heater hoses going into the firewall.  The oil dipstick is the yellow cap right below it.

oh great, thanks, yeah I found it...no my problem is that the #### plug was so tight into the trans pan that I stripped the head of it..:angry: ..It was in there....is my only option to get a whole new pan?...

That sucks.  I've heard people have had problems with the plug being overly tight.  You should be able to order just a tranny pan drain plug for it.  I just ordered a drain and fill plug for my transfer case today.

No, I don't know those.  Sorry.

My drain plug was a Torx T50 in my 99.  Rounded it out the first time I touched it.  Ended up ordering a pan / service kit from the dealer that came complete with the pan / gasket / filter...cost $60 something.  Anyways, the NEW plug was an 18mm bolt.  Doubt I'll be stripping that out anytime soon.  There's simply too much torque put on that bolt to use a TORX head bolt.
