I have a 1989 GMC K 2500 SLE EXT CAB. Would like to know if I can swap my 5 speed,the lit duty one to an auto. What would be the problems. any ideas.

It will honestly be easier to just buy one with an auto. Youd have to change the transmission, steering column, I believe the rear axel (maybe not) It's just so much more work than it is worth- These are so old and cheap not for 2 grand or less you can buy one w/ auto transmission.

 

I bought mine w/ AT for like 300 bucks man. Try using craigslist in your local city- I find a lot of cheap auto trucks on there.

I have not done this swap on my GM, but did that on an older F truck. What are you trying to accomplish by doing this? You can drop an auto behind the motor with no problem. You will have to account for buying the trans, getting shift linkage to the tranny, installing a new radiator with a cooler, finding an auto trans mount and possibly having the drive shaft modified to fit. Find a donor vehicle in the scrap yard or buy a truck with an auto, take what you need, that makes it a lot easier than chasing parts.
