2002 No Fuel Guage And Engine Surges

I have an 02 S-10 with 4.3 Recently I pulled the engine and rebuilt it after blowing a head gasket. I thought since I had it that far down and it had almost 200k it needed refreshing. Anyway.... I pulled the transmission with the engine because I couldnt see an easy way to get all of the trans bolts out. Every thing went well except when I first turned the switch back on I had no fuel guage. Light is on and guage never even jumps when you turn the switch on. Also the temp hand falls and rises. When it falls the engine will loose power and at idle will sometimes die. If the cruise control is on the engine will surge to about 1500 rpm. sometimes. Doesnt do all of this ALL the time. I have tried to find a loose ground or a broken wire. I cant find it. Any Ideas before I loose all my hair???? Lights, air, windows all work fine. And engine runs like its supposed to IF temp hand is WHERE its supposed to be.

I had something similar happen. There is a ground wire behind the passenger side of the cam under the bed. (directly under the fuel door) Mine had broken,my fuel pump was surging and i had no fuel gauge. You might check that. Otherwise you have a pinched wire somewhere that happended durring reinstallation. (this was all on an 04' sierra though)
