1998 chevy 1500 4x4 vortec 5.7L about 120k. I keep this truck up north so next weekend I have to go up and check everything with my tools from home which I didnt have last weekend up there.

2 weeks ago truck ran and drove perfectly. I parked it and went back up there last weekend and truck would crank over but not start. I hear the fuel pump and pressed the valve on the fuel rail and it seemed to spray a little gas. It was above freezing out, (about 36*F) and there was about 1/4 tank of fuel. It sounded like it was firing once in awhile but not enough to start most of the time it just cranked w/no fire. I will be taking my handheld scanner, spark tester, and a fuel pressure gauge next time I go but was looking for other ideas for what to look for/try. I was thinking fuel pump but I hear it running when key on/off, or maybe pcm. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: truck has new plugs and wires about 5 months ago

Did you install a new distributor cap/rotor when replacing plugs and wires? I had the same problem with my '99 5.7...no codes and dealer couldn't duplicate (Of course, it started great after I had it towed in to dealer! :) ). An independent shop told me to install a new NAPA cap and rotor, being sure to utilize the OEM screws and that's totally solved the problem for 40,000+ miles. FWIW. Mc
