2002 Sierra 4x4 - Maintenance

 Hi,

It's been a while since I posted because hard times hit and I had to sell my truck.

Good news is I came across a 2002 4x4 Seirra that needed some TLC, but runs OK.

I knew the brakes needed work, so I've just relaced pads and 1 rotor. It looks like the ball joints have not been greased in while, so I did that and plan to put some engine bright and wash it down since I see oil around the back of the oil pan which maybe the drain or the rear seal.

I'd like some advice on a couple of things.

The breaks stop good but if I hold pressure they slowly will move to the floor. I don't see any leaks. I've blead them compete set. Master celinder?

Next, what would be good maintaince things to do since I have no service records and what should I avoid. I assume, oil, filter, trans & filter, transfer, front an rearends, anti freeze and what order of urgency since money is tight.

Thanks! :)

Just throwing out this list, some of which you already indicated.

- Brake System FLUSH

- Power Steering system FLUSH

- Coolant system FLUSH (Replace the hoses and thermostat while your at it) AND FLUSH IT! DO NOT DRAIN AND FILL! FLUSH!!

- Oil System FLUSH (Or just do a Mobil-1 5W30 Synthetic oil change at 1000 miles, that should get things cleaned out)

- Transmission system FLUSH (and filter change)

- Fuel Injection system Serviced (GM has a very cool way of doing this and a great chemical that they use that soaks in on the system overnight, it is similar to doing a can of seafoam on the top end, but gives far better results)

- Replace serpentine belt

- New AC/Delco plugs and wires

- New fluid in front & rear Diff (Use what GM recommends)

- New transfer case fluid (Use what GM recommends)

- New Air Filter

- New Cabin Air Filter (Your truck probably has one since it's an 02, I believe they stopped putting them in in 03)

- Ensure all 14 (I think it's 14) Grease zerks are charged up.

Last Step- Reward yourself with a Beer and a Pizza, and wax and wash that beauty. (girlfriend/wife included)

DO NOT flush your tranny. There is no need to do that, and more often than not, it causes more problems than it fixes. A simple Tranny fluid swap is all that is needed if the tranny fluid is due to be replaced. Flushing the tranny can cause problems, do some searches.

Rest of the maintenance looks ok to me though.

BULL CRAP. (No offense) There is no harm in flushing a high millage transmission which may or may not have the original fluid. Now, if the tranny fluid smells burnt and looks like crap, regardless of if you flush it or simply drain and fill, it's on it's way out and nothing you can do will fix that.

I agree I just had my 02 4x4 Sierra's tranny flushed about a month ago and it shifts fine, no problems. After all a simple drain and fill leaves about 5-7 qts of contaminated fluid up in the tranny, you top off the transmission with new fluid just to have it contaminated all over again.
