Looking At Buying A '09 G8 Gt

As the title states I’m looking into a '09 GT with 19k and it’s Stryker Blue. They are asking 26,750, if the talks and end number goes well then great. If not I won’t be disappointed, I still love my truck. Yes I’m looking at trading my Silverado in on it. I have the terrible trait of getting the new car itch way too often. Also I don’t use/need the p/u to its full potential. So like I said before we'll see if they can get to the numbers I have in mind.

But to the original intention of this post is, I know there are a few G8 GT owners on here and was just looking for some feedback and what kind of pros/cons. Also any common issues. Things like that. I heard that the 6.0 in the GT has AFM. Is that true? And if so are the owners having the same concerns about lifters, oil burning, smoke etc that the handful of 5.3 AFM owners are experiencing?

Thanks for all the feedback.

I haven't had any problems out of mine, the engine is great, doesn't really burn off any oil at all. Truck is the same way,

I run Mobil-1 sythetic in mine & it runs strong. LOVE beating all my friends that have Mustang GT haha....Also, beat a newer 5.0 last night.

haha awesome. Thanks for the response. Is there a differance between the 08 and 09 GT's. Ive been paging through the G8 forum and I see '09.5 quite a bit. Did they change something half way through '09?

You will love the G8, I have errr my wife has a 09 Gt and it runs pretty dang good and its completely stock.

The easiest way to tell if its a 09 or a 09.5 is look under it for an extra cat and i think were rated at 360HP instead or 361 and 375 Tq instead of 380.... The 09.5 also got bluetooth i believe.

There are alot of things you can do to really wake them up, the L76 responds well to intake, full exhaust (Long tubes back) mods and tunning. As far as the overactive lifters, I have ran Mobile 1 in mine since it was new and except for one wife/dealer oil change it has had it in there since 1500 mile to now 27K+. One distinctive thing i did pick up was 1.5 mpg with mobile one. I got it with the first oil change, not as fast but a tank of gas better. I lost it with dino oil and got it back 500miles later when i took it back to have the dealership correct their oil change. Not the same use as a truck but if you dont need it the G8 is a great replacement.

As far as mileage, i get 17-18 in town and can get 25 with the cruise st @ 76 and that is with 87. Let me know if you have any questions, im sure i missed something.

Since I got my GT, I replaced the bumper for a GXP bumper, GXP diffuser. It has a Roto-Fab CAI, Magnaflows on the mufflers. 5K HID's, Plans are LT headers, hi flow cats and I guess I will supercharge it too, if I don't sell it.

NICE!... Yep Ive been looking on g8board.com seeing what kinds of mods you can do to them and how they react to em and trying to gain a little more knowledge about the car... Negotiations started today for the local one by me. We'll see what happens. If we cant come to an agreement on this blue one I'm looking at I'm eyeing a few out of the area also.

I have an 09 in panther black.

I have mixed feelings on the car, But I am biased I wanted a BMW 335i or a cts-v which will obviously have a higher quality of build than a price point pontiac 4 door muscle car.

Pros: engine is great no oil burning on mine, styling of the car is good in my eyes, it is very smooth and quiet on the highway. 28mpg on the highway with mine.

Cons: Interior quality is total crap the headliner is barely fastened to the roof, the seats still use a manual recline adjuster knob. the hard plastic used scratches very easy, the glovebox rattles like an old ford with the balljoints beat out of it, THE STEREO IS HORRID! and there is nothing you can do with it. You have to be careful wich exhaust you use or the car will drone enough to drive you nuts.

I find the suspension in my car to be a little too soft. But I am running some nitto 555's on it 275/40r18's rear and 245/45r18 fronts so they usually out stick the suspension.

My biggest complaint is the stereo, I remember when I bought my truck I was disappointed with the stereo in it (bose) now when I want to drive and listen to tunes I take the truck.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I had a 2009 GT, just the base model with 18inch wheels and cloth seats. The car was just alright to me. I thought it was awesome bc it was fast etc. The ride quality wasn't that great bc the transmission seemed to ride pretty rough. Took it in for service and they said bc the engine was so powerful that was normal for transmission to ride rough. The main problem my car had....it had really bad wheel shake. It was fine for speeds when not on the highway, but when you hit like 62 miles an hour the wheel would shake back and forth. The dealership replaced the wheels and tires twice and still didn't fix the issue. They didn't really know how to fix the issue and it never got resolved. A few months went by and there were a few recalls on the car so it had to go to the dealership again. At this point I was tired of taking my car in and getting stuck with some cheap rental that i just traded it in and got back into a truck again.

Not saying that all G8's have problems.....but if mine didn't have the wheel shake issue i'm sure it would have been fine. I was just tired of taking it to the dealership when I only had 8k miles on it when I traded it in.

I had the SLP loudmouth exhaust on it...which u just remove the factory bc it's bolted and bolt on the new tips. It sounded real good, but there was a lot of "drone". It didn't really bother me though like it bothers other people.

Does the car have leather and the 19inch wheels?

Yes I have read about the wheel shake on g8board.com. Seems it was somewhat rare but a handful did have it. I havnt read if there is a fix or not for it. I've been chatting with the dealer back and forth about the car and talking trade in numbers. I was looking for no less than 22k but he said if my truck is as good as it looks they will give me 23,500.

Im glad I waited to go to the dealer and test drive it because they just dropped the price from 26,900 to 25,200. If the test drive goes well, they keep there word on the 23,500 trade in and they take my offer of 24,000 for the car I'll be leaving the dealership with a deposit on the car.

Do you guys think 23,500 is good for trade on my truck. Its a '09 Silverado LT, ext cab, 4X4, 5.3/4spd, tow pkg, g80 w 3.73's, factory 5 spoke 20's, power everything interior and just under 15,000 miles. Click on my profile name and you'll be able to see a pic of it on my profile page.

Thanks

    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
    • I gotta say, I'm enjoying your narration. The troubles you've been having are amusing as you describe them. It's good to see that you're finally getting some satisfaction out the old beast though.
