Front Diff noise

I had my 99 Silverado in 4HI today due to some snow. IT makes a noticible noise. At first I thought it was normal, but I tried my 01 Tahoe today and in 4HI its almost as quiet as 2 HI. Is this just a sign that I need to replace the fluid in the front diff?

have you checked the fluid level in the transfer case and front differential lately?

I havnt, but when I had it in for warrenty work about a month ago the dealer said I need to change the fluid. havnt got around to it and its really cold

If they are full of fluid, I wouldn't expect installing new fluid would make a difference. How many miles are on the truck, did he say the fluid was contaminated or dirty that it needed changed. If either were low on fluid, especially the transfer case, it might seem louder than normal.

It has 49,000 miles. He did say it was a little dirty, I do go off roading occasionally. Ill get it changed soon

I've got an '02 4x4 5.3L with 5000 miles. I have had that noise since day one and have talked to the service managers at 2 different dealerships. Both have said that it is normal. Something to do with a chain or gear drive. I requested to take another for a drive and the owner took me in his '03 which made the same noise.
