2001 jimmy 4w4 ignition key won't release to off for removal

Recommended Posts

hi and thanks for this forum.

as i indicated the ignition key functions smoothly until it's time to shift into park and shut off ignition all the way for removal.

i use 1/2 of a chop stick (yeah) to push the release through the access port on the underside of the column. i take it, that is what it is for. my question is...... before i open the shift console between the seats, am i looking for a mechanical cable connection to the column (don't think so) or an electrical switch? if a switch can it be bought separately on the inexpensive side or is an expensive wiring harness mandatory.

thanks for any insight

Sounds like the brake transmission shift interlock solnoid- aka btsi solonoid, is not allowing the release of the igntion sylinder. It can be a bad solenoid or broken wires in the console. Take the shifter cover plate off and check for wiring that may be broken or pinched, the wires flex and break or get caught in the shifter. Hope this helps.
