'03 power tow mirrors

I've got the power tow mirrors on my '03 2500HD.  Is there anything I need to do for the rubber accordian boots when washing them?  I'm not used to having soft vinyl/rubber on the outside of my vehicle like that.  Anyone use any kind of protectant on them?

 

I have learned I need to extend them all the way out when washing it.  If not, soap drips out of them forever.

Extending them out when washing makes sense.

 

I would treat them every few washes with some sort of exterior protectant that will reduce the effect of UV rays on them.  That should keep them from drying out and cracking over the years.
