1999 Shift Selector - no highlight except for PARK

i have 1 1999 Sierra with V6 motor. The shift selector highlights the P for PARK but when i move it out of PARK to another gear the highlighting disappears. The gear letters and numbers show, just no hghlighting.

 

Is there a switch somewhere that "knows" what gear you are in and highlights the proper gear?

it lives on the transmission shifter shaft,,,,

 

its called a NSBU switch
