power window not working

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 silverado 4x4 crew cab and the rear passenger window stopped working. I get 12 volts at the motor. I swapped switches from the rear drivers side with no luck. I bought a new motor still nothing. I was able to get the window to operate by hooking the motor directly to the battery. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks. That was my next option. I'll check it out next week.

The problem turned out to be a badly corroded wire that supplied power to the switch. The wire was partially separated so it allowed 12 volts but not enough amperage to turn the motor. It was broke under the threshold by the drivers door.

What do you mean by under the threshold by the drivers door? Where was the wire broken and how did you find it? I have a dead window too, and was wanting to check the wiring before ordering a new master switch. Wire is much cheaper to fix then the whole master switch board.

By threshold I mean where you step in the truck on the floor. There is a plastic trim piece that you pry up and it exposes wires that are usually taped in a bundle. What you need is a wiring diagram to find which wire supplies power to the window. Then apply 12 volts from an outside source to the switch. If the switch works then you know your power is interrupted. Trace the wire that supplies power and look for any breaks. I checked where the wire goes thru the door then kept going under the seats until I found it by the drivers door. I forgot to mention to first check for power at the source to make sure it's not a blown fuse.

I see you have the same vehicle as mine. The power wire was orange.

Thanks for the info. Mine is actually the drivers side window not working. I traced the wires and didn't find any pinches or breaks anywhere, nice and clean. Motor works good when wired to the battery. So I guess it's a bad switch, can't find anything else to check out.
