Tweeter400
I am planning on changing the fluid in the rearend and clean it out. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for doing it? Does anyone know the torgue specs on the bolts? Thanks!!
Rotorwrench
The torque on the housing cover bolts is 30 ft pounds. Don't forget to put some limited slip additive in with the oil.
chev_tech
I agree on the 30 ft lbs of torque on the rear cover bolts, but limited slip additive is not recommended on these rear ends.(even if it has option G80, limited slip). Additives are only to be used on "F" bodies and corvettes with limitied slip. Also if you have an 8.5 in. rear end, it has 75W-90 synthetic lube in it. bigtruck21
put in the additive if your manual says to, or if you hear extra grinding noise in the rear end after changing it out. Amsoil, redlineoil, royal purple, and neosyntheticoil comes with the limited slip additive already in their gear lube.
GREGGO
While your at it, you might want to pick up another magnet for the cover. I tried to clean mine off, but it was eiser to just replace it. I used the additive and Mobil 1. I have an Auburn posi though.
Tweeter400
When I take the cover off, do I need to spray the dif out with something to clean it?? I have never done this before, so any help is appreciated!!
bigtruck21
I've heard people use brake cleaner to clean the cover really well, but it's not needed and some people even discourage it. I'd say just wipe it down really good with a rag. No need to mess up the chemistry for the new oil.
