During my stay @Summer Camp, I shot Shotguns and high-powered rifles (And got earplugs stuck in my ears while doing so, but that's a different story:biggrin:)

After shooting these guns for awhile, I'm kinda hooked on shotguns. I'd like to own one (or two) in the future, but I gotta ask something. What's the best way to carry a gun in a PU?

Richmond city and the surrounding Suburbs have a law against Firing weapons at all, So I'd have to travel out of the area to do so.

I'm trying to avoid  Gun-Racks  because having a Gun in plain sight like that  around where I live is just like having a note (In big letters) on the back window that says "Car-Jack me and use my guns against me ASAP!". And Locking your doors just doesn't work around here.

So, Any Advice???

Also, I would get a GUN cabinet before I buy a gun. No need to tell me that.

When I had mine in my regular cab '91, I kept it in a soft case behind the seat, out of sight.  With my current truck, I can fit it on the floor under and behind the rear seat.

What kind of shotgun are you planning on getting Jeremy?  I have a Remington 1100.  I have two different barrels for it.  A 30 inch full choke, and 28 inch modified choke.  I don't know for sure how old it is, but I remember me and dad bought it off of a friend of his sometime in the early to mid 80's.  It's been a great shotgun.  Before I had that one, I used my grandfather's Remington 20 gauge.  I don't know how okd it is either, but dad said he remembers his dad hunting with it when dad was a kid.  His dad died when he was around 13, so that would have been around 1962 or earlier.  It still works verry good to this day.

I do just like Tom, carry it in a soft case under the rear seat out-of-sight. However, I only carry my guns to the shooting range or on hunting trips. I live in Texas and when you carry firearms in your vehicle there is a law (I believe) that states you cannot carry your firearm loaded or the shells cannot be in reach of the with the gun. I hope your not planning on carrying the shotgun for personal protection. If so get a handgun for that with a concealed weapons license.

I HIGHly advise getting rules before buying.  My state, Kansas, has seveal pre-rules to purchasing.  1: 18 with rifle/shotgun's;21 for pistol/handgun. 2: certain time for residency, 5 day waiting period where they do a background check, felony=no weapons.  I'm not sure how most states do it, but you'd probably have to go through a hunter's safety course in order to purchase.

Honestly, I would get a used gun from a friend first.  Really there's no rules that will apply on this.  I've only boughten one handgun from a dealer just about 4 months ago.  I bought a 9m Beretta from a dealer.  I made a trip down there to look and purchase, then a week later made another trip to get it.  I really don't hunt that much, been too busy last several years, but I do own a Ruger 22 with a scope, 12 guage Western Field that's over 40 years old, and  a 30-06  Winchester with a scope.

I'm certainly not a hard core gun fanatic, but I would start with a 22 General, and work your way up.  That's how most people start, and then join the NRA!

No, I would use the shotgun(s) strickly for recreation, and not as a protection device.

Tom, I'm not sure What kind I want, but I do know the particular gun I shot @ camp was a 12 Guage. And I liked it.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I have a remington 12 ga 870 express pump and a Browning (made in belgium) 12ga auto. The remington sells for about ?.00 at wal-mart, its a good gun to have for for bird hunting, home protection or anything.

My 1100 is really good for bird hunting when using the 28 inch modified barrel.  The 30 inch full choke barrel isn't good for birds though.  Worked great for squirrels.  I've done a lot of bird hunting in back home in WV, and in Kentucky and Nebraska.  Down here in SC, I believe your only allowed to carry 3 shells in hte gun, but back home we could load it with all 5 shells.

If you want to know the local laws for the Richmond area, go talk to my brother-in-law at Scott's Bait & Tackle in Richmond (3314 Mechanicsville Pke).  To say he's an avid hunter would be like saying Jerry Rice is a good receiver.  It's an incredible understatement.  He could also give you some first hand advice on selection (pump, auto, 12g, 10g, etc).  Happy hunting!

Let me get this straight.  They let him shoot a gun at camp, he gets his earplugs stuck in his ears and now we're going to point out places to arm and supply him???  :o:o  So he can use them "strictly for recreation"???  Can't we just help get him a truck first?!?!?!?

Remington,Ruger,Smith and Wesson and Savage are very good guns to own and are relatively inexpensive when compared to the likes of Browning,Beretta and Benelli.

I transport mine in a hard case as well, especially my scoped rifles. You can carry shotguns in a soft case and it shouldn't hurt them as long as they are in a secure area.

My guns are as followed.

Brand(?)    .410 single shot

Winchester Ranger    12 ga. pump

Savage       20 ga pump

Marlin semi auto    22 long rifle

Remington model 700    30-06 with a Leupold 2x7 scope

Browning A Bolt II   300 magnum with a Nikon 4.5-14 scope

Ruger P90 DC   .45 automatic

In Texas, shotgun wise,it is legal to remove the plug in your shotgun so it can carry 5 rounds in the magazine as long as you do not hunt migratory birds with it.

I have the following guns.....

Remington Model 870 Wingmaster - 12 gauge

Remington Model 870 Wingmaster - 20 gauge

Remington Model 1100 Wingmaster - 12 gauge

H&R single shot - 20 gauge (first gun)

Remington Model 700  "Custom Deluxe" with Bushnell Trophy 3-9 scope - 25-06  (this is one awesome looking gun, almost too good for me to get scratched up deer hunting)

Ruger 10-22 semi-automatic, synthetic stock and stainless steel - .22 long rifle

Can you guys tell I like Remingtons?  Now all I need is another model 700 in a bit bigger caliber.  How do you like your .300 magnum, yZR2k?
