Question on tires and allison

Ok the other day I was filling up and next to me was a guy with an H2 so we started telling. He claimed he had taken a trip to Cali from New Mexico and his H2 could run could run 100 mph all day long if he wanted to. He also said that he averaged around 23 mpg??? I think that is kind of high but don't know. Anyway then I stopped in a the local H2 dealer just to talk to them. I asked the sales guy what made it possible to run the 315's when on my D-Max all I hear is be careful you may have problems running larger tires. The dealer told me that it was because the H2 comes with a 4:10 and some special locker that allows them to run this size tire???? I then spoke with a sales rep from GM and asked the same question and all he told me was that when the Alison would preform best using the smaller tires, although he also did not care for the 245's and had suggested numerous times that this area be upgraded. Anyway I have thought about going with the 315 set up but do not want to compromise any performance. I currently run a 285 and wold only go with the larger tire for the looks. However the performance is much more important and it the Alison, as good as it is, will suffer from this I would consider going back to a 265. Anyway I know this has been talked about before but when I talked to the H2 sales guy it did not make sense. What do you guys/girls think? :see

I don't know.....4:10s? Running 100? In that truck? I doubt that very seriously, especially the 23 mpg part.

HMMM, those H2 owners/dealers sure think they have something special , when in all reality, they SUCK!!!! They look like the armored Wells Fargo trucks. UGLY!! The first hummer is awesome, and I wish I had one, but too expenisve for me!! BUT anyway, my Allison performs perfect and I have pretty big tires. It shifts a little diferently, but still performs as good as when I had 245's. I have had my lift and tires for a year now, and never a problem. As far as gas mileage, the H2 isnt getting 23, especially at 100 mph, unless its going off a cliff with a tailwind. They are VERY far from aerodynamic!

That guy was full of lies... 23MPG Phooey... Yea it'll run 100 MPH but so will your truck...

I don't believe the H2 has the Allison either, because it is powered by the 6.0L and is most likely coupled with the 4L80E just like in my truck...

The best MPG's I've seen is 16.6 mpg with 265/75/16 tires...

-H2 is a Vortec 6000 with a 4L80/85E. NOT an Allison.

-Having a locker has nothing to do with what size tire you can run.

-The sales man is correct for best performance with the Allison and your HD in general, the stock 245/75/16's work best for load bearing and towing capacity and speed. It is a small tire with "E" range sidewalls, and lower rolling resistance due to it's smaller width and runs a high pressure. It just doesn't have the LOOKS if you follow.

23mpg?? LOL!!! I get barely get that with my Monte Carlo. I find it hard to believe that a 6,000+ lb truck with the aerodynamics of a brick and a thirsty V8 gets that. Having 4.10's won't help at all.

I have two. a 96 Z34 and a now a 2003 SS (well, that's Mom's).

I can upload pics.

And yes, I love them. That is until I have to work on the 3.4L DOHC V6 in the 96 Monte.

It's called "Sandrift Metallic" which is where the car got the name "Sandi". When she wanted it, I went out and roped up all the SS's that we either had or were getting at the time, took them off the truck myself, and put them in a corner for her to pick. I would've prefered the navy blue metallic, black or red, but those either weren't fully loaded or had the additional XM radio (which she cared less about). Her requirements were SS (of course), fully loaded including moonroof (she got used to it in my Aurora) and heated seats (she also got spoiled by the heated seats in the Aurora and my truck). She would've been happy with cloth but in order to have heated seats I believe leather was the only way.

Anyway, to make a long story short, she walked out of there with a $28k Monte SS for under $20k. No trade in(s), no money down and 4.9% financing. She's still on the honeymoon with it.

That's unbelievable!! I wish I had those kinds of connections! I want the red one with alot of black trim and the yellow lettered Good Year Eagle tires, they look awesome! My wife and I are HUGE dale Jr fans, and we want everyone to know it!!!

I just recently drove a Jeff Gordon SS. I'm an Eanrhardt fan to, but I'm happy with any of them wearing that red bowtie, really.

It was a beautiful car, especially the ghost flames. But I don't know if I've drop the $$$ on one.

The people I know with H2s say they only get 10 - 11 MPG. I'd even be suprised if the H2 could do 100 without forced induction or a new heads.

Yea I hear allof you I know for sure that he was trying to blow smoke you know where. Anyway this is my first diesel and I know that on preveious trucks 1/2 305 vortec and 3/4 454, a jump to larger tires realy hurt the towing preformance and MPG. I just dont want that to happen with this truck even thought it is a diesel the change in the gearing is what bothers me.

I would say that if you are going to be doing a lot of towing I would not go larger than a 265 and get an "E" Load Range tire as well. Bigger tires do look nice though. Good luck....

Now I finally know what that twitch of familiarity is everytime I see an H2.

Those small windows on the big body; Wells-Fargo, etc, could use these for off-road armoured cars and it wouldn't look out of place at all.
