Front Camera Installation-2020

I'm fortunate because my  garage is large enough for a two post auto lift that I park my 2020 Silverado Custom under.  To make parking easier between the lift posts, I installed a license plate frame mounted Lastbus front camera from Amazon.  One reason I chose the Lastbus camera was because it uses my iPhone as a monitor rather than a separate screen.   Since others may want to do the same thing, I thought it might be helpful to discuss the install and share some photos.

 

1.  Mounting:  This step is a little tricky because the GM front plate holder is riveted in place.  I drilled out the rivets from the front and detached the plate holder so I could use the bench for mounting everything.  I drilled a hole in the plate holder and air dam to run the camera wire up into the engine compartment and then bolted the plate holder back in place using the original rivet holes.  To make future removal and replacement practical I created a stud system by permanently installing bolts in the license plate holder that were long enough to go through the air dam and be secured with fender washers and flange nuts from the back.

 

2.  Wiring:  For power, I used  position 40 in the under hood fuse box to install a micro fuse tap and drilled a small hole in the fuse box cover to pass the camera power wire through.  I grounded the camera by using the negative post on the battery.  The positive and negative wires were snaked through the passenger side of the engine compartment to the fuse box and battery.  As a last step, they were jacketed with automotive grade split plastic covering.

 

3.  Operation:  Set up was accomplished easily by following the directions that came with the camera.

 

Conclusion:  The camera is handy for close parking situations, looks decent and is a good addition to my truck.
