Interesting Truck

I had to go to Eglin AFB to pick up some gear, so I went to the Motor Pool for a 6 ton stake truck.

I got a White Freightliner with a 5.9 Cummins in it. I thought,  "Okay, it's a good diesel, no problem."

WRONG!!!

It was converted to run 100% Certified natural Gas. It had friggin' splark plugs in it! The mechanic said that Cummins did that with quite a few motors. They run quieter, are efficient, run thinner oil, and work pretty good for around town delivery vehicles.

It was the most gutless pig I've ever driven in my life! Didn't have enough power to get out of its own way. Topped out at 65mph on the highway, I'm sure that was gearing. The interior was very uncomfortable and there was not nearly enough legroom for my 6"2' frame.

I know that the Cummins diesel has its good and bad points, but a Cummins CNG motor is pathetic in every sense of the imagination.

The motor pool used to have a couple of Fords and one big Chevy diesel that were all more comfortable and had enough power to at least get you going.

I think I would have been better off with an old stovebolt six in that truck than the 5.9.
