Anyone use an inverter?

I want to install a 2000watt inverter in my 04 K2500HD reg cab. The unit is about 16" long and 8" x 8". Any one ever do this. I was thinking under hood but the heat will be a problem so I was thinking behind the seat. Any ideas? It needs to be out of the weather.

What is the application?

I've used Tripp-Lite HD commercial inverters, have also seen them in commercial use, and they appear to work well. They are supposed to be mounted in a protected area, NOT under the hood or outside. Cab would be ideal.

They're really expensive and need a lot of juice. I would never hook them up to the vehicle electrical system. The systems I've seen the service truck has a separate alternator and battery just for the inverter, 100% isolated from the vehicle power system.

Most folks I know that used to use inverters simply installed a gas or diesel genny in the bed. It was a lot cheaper, much less hassle, etc. For example, Hobart or Lincoln offer a combi genny and welder, so you've covered all the bases. Those are slick.

Geez I forgot to mention the specs. I have the Tripp-Lite Powerverter catalog right in front of me.

Assuming 2000w peak and 1000w continuous:

The PV1000FC needs 95 amps at peak load and costs $360.

Assuming 4000w peak and 2000w continuous:

The PV2000FC needs 190 amps at peak load and costs $529.

Even the PV1000FC should not be hooked directly to the vehicle electrical system.

I am going to use a Power brite AFD 2000, it is less than $300.00. It will draw 200Amps max. I have the factory option for dual battery with an isolator. I have a generator I load into the bed for bigger jobs. I don't need it taking up bed space when not needed. I have many cordless tools for small jobs but sometimes still need a miterbox or power planner. This is not something that will be used all day everyday but will be real convient when needed.

I just don't know how hot the inverter itself will get , could it be mounted under a seat? Dirt would also be a concern. Just wondered if anyone else was doing this.

Ok just so you know what you're getting into. Even with the second battery and isolator, your alternator is going to get a workout.

Not sure about the model you mentioned, but the Tripp-Lite Powerverter has built-in fans and temperature monitoring. If it starts to overheat, it shuts down and keeps the fans running to cool off. So in that respect it's "smart."
