Anyone have RWHP numbers

Chevy rates its 2003 8.1L (RPO L18) @340hp/455lb/ft torque. Im assuming thats at the crank. Anyone have RWHP numbers for the 8.1L? Trying to find out what my actual RWHP will be after the westers tune gets installed. Lyndon told me to expect a 52-54 RWHP gain and a 76-80 lb/ft of RW torque gained. Just trying to convert that to total numbers at the rear wheels. Thanks

Your stock RWHP numbers have a lot of variables. First, the type of drivetrain you have. The Allison is supposed to be less effecient than the 4L80 and so your RWHP will be less than a Suburban. Also, 4wd vs 2WD, then add in altitude, barometric pressure, humidity, temp, etc. and you get the idea. Best way is to find a dyno and test your change same day, and close to the same time. Everyone's RWHP will be different.

8.1L/Alli combo

4x4

0' - 500' max altitude where i live

4.10 rear

average winter temp 30- 40 degrees, 30-50% humidity

average summer temp 80-90 degrees, 70-80% humidity

Doesn't the allison rob you of something like 23%?? 28% of the HP?? for some reason I thought it was around 240-270 at the rear wheels....that's a total guess of something I think I remember reading though. I really have no idea

Is this because of Torque management? Or is it just the auto robbing us?

This is why we have SAE correction factors actually... to normalize our power curves for comparisons. For example my TA will generate over 450 rwhp NA in cool weather with low humidity, but the correction factors will normalize it back to around 405 rwhp SAE.

 

Your drivetrain comments are valid although not the 4x4 / 4x2 comment... unless you intend to dyno in 4x4 high on a all-wheel dyno.

Allison=36% loss. :shakehead: Which should put you in the area of 255-260 rwhp and 330-335 rwtq stock. Again this is just a ballpark and will vary from dyno to dyno, day to day. Just FYI my truck dyno'ed 300 rwhp/440 rwtq on average, and thats spinning the rollers with 35's. My plans call for a 100hp boost this spring. :nono:

Out of curiosity...what are the specs on your truck besides 8.1 and 3.73's.....What does "Loaded" mean??? :D

im confused, If allison = 36% loss....then how did you dyno at 300/440? You have the same setup as me except i have the ext. cab not crew cab, and i have a 4.10 rear.

okay, that makes sense now. Thats a tough looking ride you got there. Looks like you have upwards of about $150 - $175 invested in that rig... :shakehead:

Got my Westers done last week, I only have SOTP to go by, but doubt that the gains were that much. Don't get me wrong, but that would be a large increase. Would do it again though. I know a couple of guys with the same set up except they have 3:73, trying to talk them into lining them up but so far their ego is manifesting itself in "gee I don't know if I should " ways. I will wear them down though.

I'll let you know when I get one of them to play. :shakehead:

I don't know, it does run really good, and just to test the limiter, I just exceeded what the top speed USED to be by a GOOD margin, and it did it without effort. I can also get a little first gear scratch now and it would not before. Anyone know how many miles it takes to break in an engine to where it really gets to the "sweet spot"? I have about 7000 on mine now.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
