Just got a recall letter today!

I am surprised that I got a letter! I was going to go and pay to have them replaced because of the stories I have heard and mine look a little coroded already, but now it's going to be FREEEEEE!!! Anyody else get this letter? They said they will be replaced with stainless steel cables, and until I do get them replaced, dont sit or stand or put any loads on the tailgate in the open position. For all full size GMC Sierra trucks from 2000 to 2004.

I got the same letter from GM today. They said they would send me another letter when the stainless steel cables are available at the dealer.

I am not holding my breath for my new cables. I will probably be cables #7,999,999 and #8,000,000.

Have not got a letter yet, but I have a set of VR Stainless straps for my tailgate already so I am in no real hurry for the straps from GM. I will take them as a spare set of course. I don't think I will need them anytime soon.

This should apply to all 99' to current Silverado's, so your dealer is crazy!

Well you are all better than I am.

I replaced mine a couple of months ago. I was opening the gate and the d@#$ thing just about took my foot off. The gate hit the bumper and took some nasty scratches.

When they go they just go. As my truck was out of warranty I ponied up and bought some for about $50 a pair.

I have a 01 with 55k miles. When the recall comes up, my advice is to take it. In the mean time watch that tailgate.

I guess I lucked out, about a year ago I was fishing and I threw all my fishing stuff in the bed and went hauling-A down the canyon and my tailgate flew open at like 65-70 MPH! It was SO loud and scared me to death, but the cables didnt break. If they would have broken my bumper and gate would be SCRWED! I think I may go buy some cables before my truck gets called in just in case my tailgate flies open again. 50 bucks isnt bad, and ALOT less than a bumper and new tailgate!!

I got the letter too. Notice how it says until stainless steel cables can be installed on your vehicle, do not stand, sit, or apply loads directly onto the tailgate when it's in the full open (horizontal) position. What a bunch of BS! Basically they're saying don't use your truck for it's intended purpose. How sad is that?

Jim they are saying that so someone isnt standing on the tailgate and the cable breaks and they get hurt. It sucks that the cables suck in the first place, but that is what they have to do for saftey.

Thats stretching it a bit. They are saying don't stress the cables, its not like the cables are stopping the truck from being driven.

It shouldn't take the dealer but a few miutes to replace them so its not a big deal.

PS. got a second letter today, this on for the Dmax.

Got mine on friday. Good thing to, cause i was gonna haul a cord of wood home this week on the tailgate. Guess i wont do that now.

To say you shouldn't use the tailgate for anything other then decoration -- which is basically what they're doing -- is preventing you from using it for it's intended purpose; as a truck. For some their truck might be a commuter vehicle or play thing -- and that's fine -- but for others (like me) we actually have to do stuff that requires the bed to be used like the tool it's supposed to be. And if you can't really use the tailgate for anything then it is a pretty sad statement.

I just sent off money for the VR straps the day before I got my recall letter. I'll take the straps over cables any day.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
