Power Steering Hiss

I have 4K miles on my 2001 Sierra.  When I turn the steering wheel I am hearing a definitive hiss.  Although the noise seems to have no effect on performance or the steering of the vehicle it is a bit annoying.  Has anyone else experienced this?  The sound is likened to a GM vehicle that you have tried to turn the wheel too far and have sorta bottomed out the power steering.

This sound occurs in motion, in a light to moderate turn and is very audible inside the cab.  It is not any quiter with the windows up than it is with them down.

Your power steering pump might be going bad.  I'd take it to the dealer and have them look at it.  They should fix it under warranty.  If not, you at least have a record of bringing it in for a possible problem if it would happen to go out after the warranty ran out.

Boy:  Yall don't miss a trick do ya?

Of course my truck is not low on power steering fluid.

Neither is the belt loose or the wheel trapped against the curb.

It is an annoying noise if you notice it.  I guess it grows on you too.  I used to barely hear it...now it bigs me like nails on the chalkboard.  Or..better yet...  two coke bottles rolling around together on the rear floorboard!

I have the same problem with my 2000 gmc 1500 ext cab. I took it to the dealer and they gaffed me off. I think this could be a manufactures defect of some sort. Has anyone else had this problem and got it fixed? If so what was the problem? The steering makes an hissing/ sqealing type sound that is more noticable when turing to the left. Everything looks ok fluid ect.. It does not seem to effect the safety of the system. But it is annoying when you 20 + for a new truck it shouldn't do this.

SwampBoy - - You may wish to take this to the dealer that "gaffed" you.  BTW...Where I am from, a gaff is a pole with a sharp hook on the end used for landing large fish.  Hmmmm You probably have never landed a large fish though.

To "gaf" someone or something off, means to ignore.

Gaf, meaning "Give a F&*K" as in, "I don't".
