PCV Valve question

Went to check some stuff on my truck and when I pulled the pcv value it was very dirty and had oil in it, not sure the last time this was changed.

 

Is this a bad sign? or just a sign of a overused pcv valve? It still rattles when shaken

If it still rattles it is most likely still good.. 99% of the time they don't need replacing... Just a shot of carb cleaner in there and you are good to go...
