Question about servicing transmission

Recommended Posts

Posted

Truck: 2000 Silverado 2wd 5.3

I bought this truck w/ 40,000 miles on it, now at 95,000.

Don't know if the transmission was ever serviced prior to buying, I have not had it done.

What service, if any, should be performed?

Dealer service or good local shop?

Thanks, Mark

Mark, it would have been best if it was serviced at 50,000 miles. At 95,000 you are kind of in a bad position if the fluid has never been changed. New transmission fluid is like degreaser, it will loosen up deposits that have built up on your transmision over the years. However doing nothing may cause your transmission to fail also. I would probably drop the pan and change the filter and the fluid in the pan only, and not go to a shop that would do a complete system change. A complete system change may be too much of a shock to your transmission at one time. I would prefer to change the filter and fluid in the pan more frequently and change the fluid a little at a time, intead of the complete system change. This is only my personal opinion. MWM

I'm with MMM, a complete flush may have an adverse affect at this point. Pan gasket and filter (comes together as a kit), that's what I'd do.
