truck running like c*ap...any ideas???

SES light came on last night. My truck is skipping and running like garbage. If I punch it it seems ok, otherwise it is skipping like crazy. Codes are:

 

P0307- cylinder 7 misfire

 

P0137- Sensor circuit low voltage (bank 1 sensor 2)

 

I'm thinking maybe an oxygen sensor??? If so, where do I start. Any other ideas would be helpful and appreciated. This is killing me right now!!!!

I'm travelling 65 miles each way to work and can't afford to have my truck layed up.

i know your feeling on having your truck out of service. if you drive to work, you have two choices , car pool is one,if not ,here is what i had to do. i bought a cheap second hand car to use. i got it for 1500.i only used it when my truck was out of service.if you have a relative that you could use their car, that would work to. i used the second car as my way of getting to work. i know your feeling.we all are driving to much of distance to work and cant car pool.hope this helps,been there done that! :lol:

I'd look at the cyl 7 misfire first- check the vitals- air, fuel, spark, compression...then take it from there. The one code could be related to the other, the misfire might be affecting that 02 signal.

I checked the spark plugs, and the #7 definetely looked different. I replaced the bosch platinums with AC/DELCO platinum plugs. Started the truck and it ran fine for about 3 minutes, the the service engine soon light came back on. Checked the code and it read:

 

P0137- cylinder 7 misfire

 

What do I do...what do I do??????

Sounds like you have #7 injector staying open, which means it will keep dumping fuel when it should not.

 

Have a buddy crank the engine while you check for good spark at the end of #7 wire. If good spark, then replace #7 injector.

A leaky injector would not cause a missfire code, mearly a high CO reading on the 5-gas analyzer. In a rich condition sernario caused by a leaky injector where the is excess fuel in the combustion chamber, it would be eaiser for the spark to jump the gap between the electrode and tip of the plug. This is because spark will transfer through fuel better than air, less resistance through the fuel. Oh, and dont pull the plug wire off and try to crank it, you will be making the ignition coil produce its maximum voltage and you could burn out the ICM for that cylinder.

 

Look for any loose or pulled out pins from the harnesses. I would look at the connection from the plug wire to the coil and then the plug wire to the spark plug. If you have access to a Digital Multi Meter than this makes your job a lot eaiser. You would check the resistance on that plug wire, should be about 950Kv, then if that checks than you could check the resistance of the ignition coil. Not sure what the specs on that coil are though. If all that is good than a compression test would be next up. You could have a plugged injector or a problem with that injectors wiring which would make a lean condition, causing a lean missfire. After swapping the coils from another cylinder, with no improvemnet. I decided to start taking things apart until I found a problem. Sure enough, the # 7 fuel injector was plugged with rust and crap!!! Continued on and cleaned all of the injectors with air and throttle body cleaner. Runs like a top now!! Thanks for thne help!!!

Took the truck to N.H. while towing 5,000 lbs. Friday. About halfway across the Mass. Pike, the problem reared its ugly head again...same code. Ran terrible and I averaged 7.5MPG. Took the truck to Portsmouth Chevy in N.H. and they replaced the #7 fuel injector on Saturday, ($140) I have put 450 miles on since then and the truck has run perfect. Averaged 9.9 MPG on the way back Saturday night. My hat goes of to Portsmouth Chevrolet for servicing my truck so fast on a Saturday and holiday weekend to boot!!!

not sure if you fixed problem yet but dont forget to clear old codes or they will show up right away again.to clear just disconnect battery for a couple of mins

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
