fuel pump whine

My fuel has had an off and on whine for a couple of years now. In the last 6 months or so it has been much louder. Am I in for a fuel pump relacement in the near future?

Under normal conditions the fuel pump will make noise, if it's getting louder, it may be on it's way out. I'd check the fuel filter first though. If it's starting to clog, the fuel pump will have to work harder and will be noisier. If after replacing the filter the pump is still noisy, it may be time for a new pump.

Same exact thing happened on my 99 5.3 Sierra and I changed the fuel filter after 155,000 miles and it quieted down. There probably around 10 bucks as opposed to 350 or so for the fuel pump. My brothers fuel pump went out and the truck was going crazy it would have a problem starting he would crank it the first time and nothing then crank it again and it would start up. It lost power altogether a few times. The guy at pep boy's said that GM truck fuel pumps usually go between 125-150,000. We changed the fuel pump and it solved everything. Good luck.

Change out your fuel filter, make sure you install it the correct way. Mine quieted way down after I changed the filter out. Took about a week to acheive no noise at all.

Mine is pretty loud on the 02, been that way since I bought it.

I replaced the fuel filter, and it didn't change a bit.

I changed the fuel pump less than two years ago.  Could be time again already?

Uh... the manual recommends a fuel filter change every 30k miles. I've done mine twice in the three years that I've owned the truck (at 28k and 55k) and both times I've noticed marked improvements in idle quality. That tells me that it was definitely getting clogged.

It's only a few bucks and less than 30 minutes to change it so why wait so long?

mine whines too in my 99. already tried the filter and helped very little.....if any. but it's been doing it for a while now. doesn't have a problem starting or running, so i'm just gonna drive it till it quits. and hopefully it will quit while im close to home
