third brake light

I have a 2002 Suburban. The third brake light has some LED's out. Has anyone found a replacement for this part? I mean less than the dealer's $126.00. Thanks.

gm parts direct has it for less than $80 for brand new replacement "Tail Lamp Bulb/Lamp." if you want the part number (i don't know what type of door you have on the back of your suburban), let me know with type of back door.

While I am on this topic does anybody know if you can buy brighter bulbs for the third brake light? I am sick and tired of drivers riding my but and would like to be able to tell them to back off with out preforming a brake check.

The bank of LEDs that do not work are probably tied to the same solder joint on the circuit board. If you are thinking of replacing it anyway, you might want to try cracking that thing open to see if the solder is broken. That way you could resolder the bad connections and save a couple of bucks.

$80? Ouch. I just paid $114, shipped, from a guy on eBay selling OEM units. Mine went out on my 2001 K2500 2 months ago. All out, not just a few. I guess it's just as well because that sealed unit is fused plastic and would have required me to use a Dremel to slice off the lens to do the surgery! I guess I'll do it after my new replacement is installed. If only a few of yours are out, I would try to get into it and see if it can be saved.

Good luck!
