what is the biggest tire

I am sure this has been asked before BUT! what is the biggest tire I can install on a 2005 gmc 2500 HD with out cutting the front bumper .I considered turning the torsion bars up 4 turns to get the bigger tires in the fender wells but I am conserned about the ride quality (alittle) the truck only has 412 miles on it .THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME :D

Go for 285's, i know guys who used 305's on there trucks but had to trim the bumpers and around the fendors to accomdate the extra tread on the tire, i got 265's on my HD, so hope that helps. :D

You could move the front bumper forward. Pull the bolts out, get a handfull of washers and some longer bolts, put it all back together.

That and some sheet metal bending and I got 35s under my 2500HD.

285's would be the max i would want to go, thats a lot of tread, plus i think the dealer here voids the warranty if 33 inch tires or bigger are installed, i know someone with 22's and 305 45's which is a 32 inchish tire who got told his warranty was voided by the bigger tires :D , that was a suburban though, those new 05's are pretty sweet looking trucks and i think they raised them a bit so maybe a little bigger than 285 can be run, maybe a 295 or even 305 if you crank the bars :chevy:

Just installed Toyo open country 285/75/16's on a '05 2500HD with the stock rims and had very slight rubbing on the inner fender area. They look great overall. We did not turn the torsion bars.

You should be OK with 285/75 16's on the stock wheels. The Chevy's have a little more clearance on their lower valance than the GMC's. I would be careful of the T-bars though. Four cranks is probably to much. You will get about 1/2 inch per crank and anything over 1-1/2 inches is cutting it close with the stock shocks. If they are adjusted two inches the first deep dip you hit or speed bump going to fast will be the last for your shocks. They will over extend. I have my T-bars cranked an inch-and-a-half and they have already bottomed out(I use my truck off road for the hunts). I am just waiting for a brand to make shocks for two inches of lift. The answer to your second question:The ride is not hardly effected at all on the HD pickups.

Rancho 9000X's are approx. 2" longer than the factory shocks for the 2500 HD's. I plan to buy a set when they run the buy teh shocks get the adjustable controller free. I also run 315x75x16's with about 9 turns of the tbars and a little trimming, the ride is not to bad but i did make 1"shock spacers so my shocks wouldnt bottom out. My right tire rubs the sway bar at full lock, that is the only rubbing I have on the road.

Actually, you get about .2" per full turn when cranking the bars.

 

I agree with you on the GMC's possibly having clearance issues because of the valance if trying to go 285's. That's why I'm just going to get 265's instead. It'll look good enough.

I have a 2004 GMC 2500 HD Regular cab 4x4 8.1/Allison

 

I put 285/70/17 BFG AT's on mine and had to trim the front bumper and front splash guard in the wheel well. Done carefully you will never know the difference and 285's look great. I recommend them, but they didn't fit on mine without some minor mods. I wouldn't touch the torsion bars. Just my opinion though. :lol:

do u have pics of the trimming that you did on the gmc and what did you use to trim it .thanks for all the replies the info is great :lol:

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
