Can I use my Router to block/spoof my IP address from anyone seeing it? A friend told me I could do this as a security precaution.

I've got a router basically connecting two computers to one cable modem.

One is running XP, the other is win 98 SE.

Thanks guys.

By default, if you use the WAN port on the router, you will block the IP of the computer. The IP of the router will not be hidden. Your router will dish out IP addresses to any machine on the "inside" of the router, and the router will get its own IP from your modem. The router itself also has an "inside" IP. So, your computers have "local" IPs and your router has a local and a public IP.

To determine if your computer's IPs are "hidden", open a command prompt and type in ipconfig. The default for the router is 192.168.1.x.

This post is all based on the factory defaults for the router.

You would have to run a proxy server. I know it can be done easily but im not sure how to do it.

There are alot of IP hiding services where you basically VPN (virtual private network) to one of there computers and the internet will see there IP in another state or country, but thats not practial you everyday surfing.
