Piston slap or lifter noise?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me how to know if the noise my truck makes is piston slap or lifter noise? I have no cold start knock and don't burn oil at all. The noise is a clatter rattle noise heard on warm start or in neutral revving the motor to 1500

rpm. Was alot more noticable last winter than this winter. Have tried different oils, 10-30 mobil 1 is what I've switched to from 5-30M1 but not a great deal of difference. Dealer just tells me it's normal Started making the noise at about 5000 miles and the truck now has 27000.

I agree that it is lifter noise. I have the same thing on my 01' 2500HD w/ the 6.0L. It has been doing it for a long time now and I have no problems with the motor. My truck has 85,000 miles on it for reference. I have a little bit of csk as well. Not the quietest motor, but it runs good... :troll:

lol its a whole production when I crank over my motor in the morning. I start out with a nice round of lifter tapping and clicking, then about a minute later my csk joins in. After about 3 minutes its back to the valvetrain ticking. I've got 81,000 miles and I've not had any motor problems, but I do have a 100K miles warranty on the motor compliments of GM.

 That is pretty much what my truck does as well at start up. It seems to be worse though when it is colder outside. The spring and summer months don't seem to be as bad. You could probably bet money that you will not have any problems with the engine before that 100,000 mile mark and hopefully it will run way past it as well... :troll:

My wife complains all the time that the 8.1l sounds like a diesel.

I had a similar noise coming from my '94 corsica and finally one day I started burning a qt of oil every 50 miles. Brought it in to the stealer and they had to replace the whole motor due to piston slap.
