Demolding

I'm wanting to take the molding off of the sides of my truck, I know a few of yall have done it, so could you please tell me the procedures. I don't want to ruin my paint, so I figured I'd ask first. Thanks

Use some fishing line to get underneath one of the ends of your molding and start pulling toward the opposite end you started at. Work it slowly, pulling the line up and down and if possible, have someone hold out on the molding part you've already gone over. Don't let them pull overly much, just tell them to keep some resistance against it ie: away from the vehicle and it will make the job much easier.

 

After the molding is off, use an adhesive remover (I use Kleen Strip) to take off the leftover 3M stickies, along with an old driver's license/credit card to very lightly scrape the gack without going into the paint. A hairdryer also helps out by warming the leftovers making it easier to remove. When finished, clean, polish and wax to add protection to your newly exposed paint and areas that may have been in contact with the adhesive remover.

 

Just remember, the key is taking your time, especially if you are doing this to the truck in your sig line. That molding has been on for quite some time so it has obviously adhered well and you don't want to take paint off with the 3M.

 

Here's a link to a thread where I posted some pics of my '04 Sierra after debading it, using the same methods I laid out for you above. The side moldings are still on but it's the same procedure as with emblems. It works well on black so it should do your color scheme up just fine.

Thanks Frank, I appreciate the info. I'll probably kick the heaters on in my garage and do it this weekend. It all depends on this winter storm that's comming in up here.
