2004 Hummer NAV (15108421) in 2001 Denali

Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I have been searching, but cannot find an answer to my question.

I have a 2001 Denali with the Bose system (non lux). My friend gave me the NAV system from his 2004 Hummer H2 (PN 15108421). Will I be able to install this unit in my 2001 Denali? I know physically it will fit, but are there mods (beyond adding the GPS antenna)? Will the existing 6 disc CD player plug in?

Thanks for any redirection or answers!

PS: I saw the 16 page post from Linda on the Silverado install. Impressive! Since my install will be in an older vehicle, I do not know what to expect...

It will not work in an 01.

first it is too big to fit,

second an 01 doesn't have the data bus for it.

Dont give me all the credit.....there is a lot of positive input in that thread from a lot of people..:wtf:. BB is correct however, the 01 had the 1-1/2 size opening, while the NAV has a full 2. Even with the non-lux NAV, i think it would be a lot more trouble than its worth to make it fit (and function) in that vehicle. If it was given to you, throw it up on Ebay and use the earning to buy a nice aftermarket NAV.

How much do you want for it? What's the part number on it? You have the disc?

Hi, sorry for taking so long to reply. The unit (P/N 15108421) states on the side it is an '04 GMT800 NON LUX unit. It is one of the cool "joy stick" types. I paid my friend $690.00 for it, the North America DVD and Satellite Antenna. The antenna mounts right behind the unit and has a short 12" pigtail connection.

I really want to install it in my 2001 Yukon, but will sell it for the same price if it cannot be done.

Hi Linda. I found a mount from a 2003 that will house the Nav unit and A/C control. I also found a new "black" wood dash bezel surrond for the dash. Since I have the unit, DVD and antenna, other than the wiring, what would the biggest difficulty be?

The vehicle does have the Y91 option.

thats presents another problem, you say your Denali has the Y91 option, that means you have the lux Bose setup and the nav unit you have is the non-lux setup. That would mean the the amp would need to be swapped out for a lux version and the bose amps are not the same as the ones found in the 03 and up model years. The 03-05 headunits and lux amps need to have the GM class II databus to fucntion properly. The newer units do not have the normal wires that do several functions like:

turn the unit on and off

turn the backlighting on

dim the display at night

turn the amp on

all of the functions plus many more are now done with one wire on the databus wire.

We swapped a '05 H2 NAV radio (touchscreen) into a '03 H2 that had the uplevel radio. We had to get the '05 amp, follow Lindas "how to", and also run some additional wires to the amp because the 05 does not use class 2 between the amp and the nav radio (if i remember right).

Whats involved to get a '05 ish touch screen nav into a '01 denali? I realize I would need the 02-06 radio/hvac support and the 02-06 bezel to fit the double din radio. I have no problems running wires and switching out terminals. nor do i have a problem getting the correct amp for the radio.

Will the '01 steering wheel controls work at all? Or would I have to wire up a newer steering wheel/airbag/clockspring/harness to get the controls to work?

As you can probably tell I just picked up a '01 Procharged Denali that I want factory touchscreen nav in it.

By the way linda I followed your how to for my dads '03 Z71 suburban and that 03 H2 at my dealer and it worked great! Thanks!

Are you people not reading BBSilverado's post??????????? IT WONT WORK!!!! You may be able to physically make it fit with the conversion, but the wiring from a 02 GM to a 03 GM completely different. You might as well be trying to put a ferrari enzo motor is a honda. newer cars us something called databus that a older radio wont even understand.

i love factory upgrades, but some times you just have to let it go.

nothing is impossible, in fact the hardest part would be just changing the amp and getting the double-din radio to fit. from there everything is torn apart and its not hard to tap in a class 2 wire off of another module.

whats the big deal besides that?

Not getting it, there is no data in the 01 to get that will make the newer unit work. Newer style Data bus was from 03 to 06. If it can't see that data it will Theftlock....

Mike, i think we have to give up on explaining it to this guy. he doesnt know the first thing about this and hes trying to tell us that he will make it work. I guess being a professional installer, which I am, isnt enough to make this guy open his ears and shut his mouth. im sorry if im being a *hole but LISTEN TO WHAT WE ARE SAYING!! PLEASE!!

I bought a '95 Mustang GTS that came factory with no options. It now has factory power door locks, factory power windows, OEM cruise control, and a Clifford Matrix alarm/remote start. I would definately disagree if you tell me that I do not know what I am doing. I think that since you are a professional installer and do this everday, youd just give up on a project like this because you are plain sick of this stuff.

Whats the extent of conversion we are talking about to get this NAV to work? New BCM? New IPC? New dash harness? Getting class 2 to the radio and amp is not a problem at all, just tap off of the nearest module.

What I am saying is if you put a 04 radio and an 04 amp into a truck, provide all the necessary inputs that arent there already like class 2, a VSS, a GPS antenna, etc, how is the radio going to know that its not in a '04 truck?

Okay i did some research. Reference GM SI document #855779 if you have access to it. I am basing this on putting a NAV from a '05 Escalade into my '01 Denali. This is the description and operation document for a '05 Escalade radio. Here are the relevant facts:

Audio Amplifier

The audio amplifier is standard on some vehicle lines but is optional on most. The radio supplies low level audio signals to the audio amplifier in order to boost the signal sent to the speakers. The class 2 signal circuit allows the radio to recognize that an amplifier is present. Once the radio detects an audio amplifier, it will output low level audio signals. The audio amplifier is turned on when it receives a message via the class 2 serial data circuit indicating that the radio is on.

Theft Deterrent

The theft deterrent system is a feature on all base and uplevel radios. There is no need to program a security code into the radio as in past model years. The theft deterrent system now utilizes class 2 serial data to determine if the radio is in the appropriate vehicle. Each time the radio receives the run power mode message, it compares the VIN information it has stored to the VIN information received from a module on the class 2 serial data circuit responsible for transmitting that information. If a mis-match occurs, the radio display will indicate to the user the radio is locked. Once this takes place, a DTC will set, the radio will not respond to any button presses and become inoperative. The 2 scenarios able to cause this condition are:

A radio is installed from another vehicle.

A module which communicates on the class 2 serial data circuit which supplies VIN information to the radio is replaced and not properly setup with the correct VIN information for that vehicle.

The only way to unlock the radio is by using a scan tool. Always refer to the table in this section to diagnose the Theftlock DTC for further information.

Steering Wheel Controls

Some audio functions are available using the steering wheel controls. The steering wheel controls consist of multiple momentary contact switches that connect a series of resistors. When a steering wheel control button is pressed, a specific resistance value is noted by the BCM. This results in a generated voltage, unique to the particular button. The BCM alerts the radio that the button has been pressed, and the radio responds, just as if the corresponding radio front panel button had been pressed.

Amplifier

The amplifier in early build vehicles is a class 2 device that communicates with the scan tool on the Class 2 bus. The Class 2 amplifier will set a U100 in the radio if there is a communication problem. The late build vehicles have a NON-Class 2 amplifier that does not communicate over the Class 2 bus and therefore the NON-Class 2 amplifier will not set codes. Both amplifiers have similar operating characteristics, therefore, there are not separate diagnostics for the NON-Class 2 amplifier.

As long as you relearn the VIN on the nav radio once you install it with a Tech 2, you will be okay. I believe the NAV radios use a non-class 2 amp, so you don't have to run class 2 to the amp. It appears that the Steering wheel controls are managed by the BCM. The amount of parts and converting required to add operational steering wheel controls if not appealing to me. I don't like the placement of the '01 steering wheel controls anyhow, so I think I will just delete them. It seems to me so far that the hardest part would just be to get the radio mounted into the dash carrier. The insert that holds the radio and HVAC controls has screws on the front, but a large rivet in the back that would need to be drilled out to switch the insert. This part is not available separately from GM, it comes as part of the whole dash carrier.

Any input is appreciated!

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
