6.0 exhaust leak

Ive had this annoying exhaust leak for about a month now. Its only noticable when cold. Once everything heats up it seals up.

Anyhow.....today I decide to check all the manifold bolts. I counted 10 total. 6 on the manifold face, 4 holding the heat shield on the manifold that appear to go into the head also. First ? Is that the correct amount of bolts?

The worst happened....as Im checking the rear most bolt on the drivers side, what does it do?...............SNAP! Dammit.

Looks like this is going to be this way until the motor comes out, or the manifold has to come off for another reason. I dont think I'll be owning the truck at that time. I would like to fix it, but it looks impossible. Are there any quicker, easier ways to get this bolt back in place, and the broken one out of place? Thank you.

It's a little late for this advice, but keep it for the future.

Anytime that you have to mess with exhaust manifold bolts, esp cast iron manifolds, soak the bolts with WD-40, Break-Free, marvel's Mystery Oil, something greasy for ONE FULL DAY. Don't drive it.

I was told that 30 or so years ago and have never busted an exhaust bolt.

Now for your busted one - the manifold has to come off. If your lucky, there is enough bolt sticking out of the head to grab it with vise grips. If not, drill and easy out. Be careful here! If you break the easy out off in the hole, a machine shop will probably have to remove it and they will charge you a lot for the drill bits. I've never tried any of the new drill bit type extractors, but one of those might work, too.

Thanks for the advice.

If the bolt is in place how can I get WD40, MMO, PB Blaster into the threads?

There is a chance to try to screw it out of the head since it broke off right at the bolt head. Once the manifold is removed, there should be a good 3/4" of the bolt there I would think.

Im now going to try to get the dealer to cover this under the emissions warranty. Exhaust manifolds, gaskets, & hardware are mentioned in the emissions warranty. Im out of regular warranty, so we will see how it goes.

Thanks again for the advice. Anyone else have any advice on removing this if the dealer wont warranty it?

Does anyone know if my manifold bolt count of 10 was correct? Did I miss a few bolts?

Dealer is going to warranty it under the emissions warranty, 7/70. They are also replacing the manifold, saying its warped.

Only bummer is the length of time to do the job, 4-5 days roughly. They are going to remove the cyl. head to get at the broken exhaust manifold bolt(s). They are really tearing it down for this job. Anything else I should have attended to when its torn down this far?
