Quiet upgrade exhaust-Duramax

Recommended Posts

I have spent alot of time making my diesel ride quieter than the wifes expedition. For a performance and EGT upgrade, exhaust is next. Help me out with your experiences. Let me know which ones to stay away from and which ones rock (softly) on the duramax. Thanks

Good question. I've had some terrible experiences with aftermarket exhausts. I had a Borla catback on my escalade and it vibrated my brain at 60...

I've heard the Banks 4" and it resonated in the cab. I've rode in a diesel that had the Quadzilla 4" with Quad’s longer muffler and it was more tame. After some research I decided to go with MBRP (DPPI) on both trucks. The link is in my signature. It’s aggressive at WOT, but is very tame at cruise. No sign that it’s back there at highway speed (55-80). Contact Mark Craig @ MBRP and ask him anything. He’s very honest and straightforward.

Thankyou for the response. I guess what I am looking for is an exhaust you can't hear during unloaded activity, idle cruise, etc, yet will have "straight-thru" EGT reduction. Quality and fitment are probably the tiebreakers. Looking at Magnaflow, MBRP, etc A minimum 4" at the turbo-back.

Also not sure if I am legal here is AZ to eliminate the Cat. Does that cause any codes, DTC's, lights?

That's alot to ask for in an aftermarket system. A straight-thru muffler usually ends up making some noise, and that's what the majority of these exhausts are made up of. You can hear the MBRP with the windows down, but at cruise it's nice and silient. You won't set any codes by removing the cat - but it will get louder in conjunction w/ an aftermarket exhaust.

Listening to sound clips on both manufactureres, the magnaflow sounded more "hushed", especially at idle. The MBRP definately seems louder, of course, I'm just going from clips on those sites.

Magnaflow uses sound dampening in the muffler, don't think MBRP does.

OK, call Mark and ask him about optional mufflers.

Let’s just say that my wife, too, is very concerned about interior noise. The only time she comments is when I’m pulling something up an incline. When running around empty and driving conservative, she hasn’t said a word. But these exhaust systems are different to each individual. What’s loud to you may not be loud to me. In addition, I’ve noticed that the older a person gets – the less they’ll tolerate noise. Not saying that you’re older, though. Just an observation about continuous sound related to age. Nevermind.

Good luck

You are right about that, LOL, I'm 43, spent over 60 hours making the thing as quiet as possible. Now I am going to spend my time trying not to undo the progress. :uhoh:
