4x4 FRAME QUESTION

Dear GM EXPERT,

 

I have recently purchased an 85 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 pickup. I also own an 89 GMC 1/2 ton pickup v6 2wd (Sierra).

 

Would you happen to know how different the frames are? I want to transfer the body from the 89 gmc to the 85 chevy 4x4 frame. Could you tell me what would all be involved here?

 

Would you happen to know where I could get some detailed drawings maybe?

 

Please let me know it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I'm not that kind of expert. When we work on a vehicle in the service department, we fix original equipment and put in the correct parts for that model and year.

 

When it comes to modifications, you're in the wrong place.

TOTALLY different.

Different wheelbase

Different frame rail spacing

Different crossmember locations (and count!)

Different bed mount locations

Different cab mount locations

totally different front suspension design

Transfer case won't fit in tunnel (output side changed)

 

Swapping the '89 body onto an '85 Ford or Dodge would be no more complicated than swapping it onto the '85 Chevy.

 

If you own both you should be able to tell this by looking . . . for example compare fuel tank locations.

It might actually be easier to put a Ford or Dodge body from a leaf springed 4x4 on the 85 frame than a 89 OBS body. It would also be easier to modify 89 frame to take a live axle up front and add 4x4 to it than to put the 89 body on the 85 though it would be a bit of work too but still a lot more doable overall.
