I believe it also includes a transmission cooler.

I believe it is a tank cooler and not a aux air cooler as when I got my burb new years ago with a Z82 package it came with a external engine oil cooler and a bigger tranny tank cooler but I added a aux cooler anyway as with a aux cooler not only do you get extra cooling but if the engine gets hot the aux air cooler provides cooling independant of engine coolant temps.

Z82 Heavy-Duty Trailering Equipment Package includes trailer hitch platform and trailer electrical connector.

Taken from the following website: http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado/specifications/

Actually that page says:

"Heavy-Duty Trailering Package: includes trailer hitch platform, seven-pin wiring connector, auxiliary transmission oil cooler, trailer brake control harness and seven-way to four-way adapter"

The Z82 does include external aux. tranny cooler. All automatic tranny trucks have the one in the tank, the ones with the trailer package also have the aux. one. Been that way since at least 95.

We have some Avalances on the lot now (A few new ones and a couple used ones) and they all have the Z82 trailering pkg. but they DO NOT have an aux.trans.cooler,Why I don't know,I guess GM figures its not needed but I sure would feel better having one, especially if I was towing a 6-7,000 lb trailer!

Yes, GM does not provide a exteranl aux cooler by default until you get to a 2500HD and 3500 series trucks. My 2000 K3500 came with a aux tranny cooler from factory while my 1500 burb with Z82 did not (only a over sized tank cooler). A properly sized tank cooler can cool a tranny most of the time but their weakness lies in that when engine coolant gets hot from hard work in a hot climate (like florida) with AC running that tranny will get hot too when it too needs the extra cooling the most. With a aux cooler it is possible to overheat engine without overheating tranny too because it does not depend on coolant for all of its cooling needs and as the coolant get hotter and the oil going to aux cooler get hotter the ablity of aux cooler to shed heat increases because as its tempature relative to air temp increases, so does its thermal efficeincy so the hotter the tranny gets the more it can cool the oil (tempature drop, inlet vs outlet) as it flows thru it.

My '92 and my '02 half tons both came with a factory transmission oil cooler.

Cool but they were not consistant it there use it appears. How ever you get one, you need one as it is cheap insurance.

What is an oversized tank cooler? What year is your sub?

It is a 89 and it has been years since I changed coolant in it and last seen it but with a oversized tank cooler it has more rows of stacked tubes in tank than a stock one (it had 3 or 4 rows as I recall when stock one are just a row or sometime two). It has a Z82 trailering package for a GCVW rating of 12000 lbs which is a bit conservative for it too based on the weight I if towed with it over the years as it handles a car hauler trailer with a fullsize 4x4 truck on it without much fuss even on the highway at 65mph or so. It has very agresive clutch fan timing too and a 3 core radiator which stays cool under load as well even in hot weather and I always use the AC when it is warm and never ride with windows down.

That was one more of the things GM cut for the '03 models. The external Tranny coolers were an included in the z82 for '02 and prior.

The aux.tranny cooler still comes as part of the Z82 trailering pkg. on the pickups,Tahoes and Suburbans,Be it a 1500,2500,2500HD or 3500.

Just not on the Avalances for whatever stupid reason GM has.

This is exactly right. For some stupid reason, the aux. trans cooler does not come on the Avalanche. However, you can order part number 12497071 from the dealer and install it yourself or have someone do it. The kit comes with the cooler, 2 lines, screws, clips and instructions. It takes about 2 hours to install. Getting the clip off of the cooler line at the transmission is the hardest part. Looks just like it came from the factory that way after your done. :seeya:
