who has the "bouncie" puppies in their signature?

You know what I'm trying to say- I saw the sig a few days ago, and naturally, the vid clip of the "bouncies" caught my attention. I actually hijacked the clip, and posted it on a VW website that I go to. Everyone one on that site was going nuts asking about it.

The clip is missing now, and I can't find the guy on this site. Can anyone help identify who the clip belonged to? I'd like to link it again to the VW site. I was using it to "bump" my threads.......

So, you're admitting to stealing somebody's bandwidth, and are now asking for permission to do it some more? :P

If I catch somebody stealing my bandwidth, where ever they post MY picture....Let's put it this way...That person will probably get banned for 3 life terms for what shows up where he posted it.

Always ask first, a lot of people pay for bandwidth.

Some people just don't understand how the internet works.

I've seen a lot of times where people are trying to link to images on their hard drives.

Anyway, was this a cartoon? If so, I think I know which one it is.

Now, I've done this with smilies a few times, but I save them to my hard drive then put it on my webspace, so the addy for it is mine and not someone elses...

Is that cool ??

I've never stolen anyones pic of an avatar or anything...

But most of all- I ALWAYS GIVE CREDIT if asked. I don't steal anyone's stuff and call it mine....

no, not those, even though they're nice. Same sorta deal, but just a "close up" in a black tanktop.

To those who are angry at me- I thought it was a gif, not an avitar. I truly didn't mean to steal "bandwith", I thought it would be the same as adding any other gif to "my favorites" on my PC, then linking that to a post.

On the VW site, when you move your thread to the top of the page by responding to a post, it's a "bump", and the little gif was a perfect "bump".

The whole thing was just something I found amusing, and I'm trying really hard to stay on this side of the 'good taste' line by describing it. I had every intention of sending the member a PM asking for his permission to relink to it.

Gif is a file type, avatar is just a term used for that little picture people put next to their username. An avatar can be a gif, jpeg, jpg, or in some cases a bmp.

"My favorites" is a local (your machine only) listing of urls to webpages, they aren't actually stored images (or pages) on your hard drive unless you specify for them to be "available offline". In which case they won't work in a forum post, and will show up as a red x.

Whenever you use that url (the address line in your browser) to link to a picture, you are eating bandwidth. Every single time somebody views ANY page that you've used that url, it uses about the same amount of bandwidth as the file size. Gifs can be really large. So when, say a page has 1000 views, and the image is 250k, it uses 250,000k of bandwidth, or 250 megabytes...In addition to any other places you (and the original person) have linked it. That's a lot.

It can add up really fast, and if abused, can get cut off. In some cases (like mine) people use their ISP for their "web hosting" (where you store the pictures online for your own use) and they can shut off my internet for excessive bandwidth use. If you have a cable or DSL connection, chances are you have quite a bit of web space available for hosting your own images.

So some of us actually check the referring urls (whatever page the image is linked from) and mentally bounce that off of websites that we know we've posted it on. If I see something fishy that's spiking my bandwidth from a site that I don't frequent, I'll go to that page and see who is using it and how it's being used. If I don't like it...I replace the image (keeping the same url) with something...Unsavory. This will get the person that is using my picture and/or bandwidth in a lot of trouble on whatever site he/she posted it....Unless they posted it in a albino midget tranny porn forum for bestial necrophiliacs. :wtf:

That's basically how I understand it. But I'm no master of the internet, so somebody please correct anything I may have mis-stated.

So yes, it's good that you are intending on asking permission...Although it's probably better if you ask first. Most people don't mind, as small images really don't put much of a dent in bandwidth. The example I used above is a bit extreme, but I tried to paint it as simply as my mind sees it. I'm used to Fark, where webhosting is a HUGE issue, as some images can get over 100,000 hits in a single day, and bandwidth is usually tallied on a monthly basis.

If you have any questions about web hosting, feel free to PM or email me with them. I'll be more than happy to help you out and/or help you get your own set up.

wingnut- thanks for taking the time to explain how the "linking" works. I'm definately no expert when it comes to comphrehending how the internet works. It took me a few months to master uploading pics to photobucket, then pasting links to my threads on the VW site. I still haven't figured how to post pics on this site.

When I linked the "bouncing" gif, I right clicked the image, clicked the "properties" box, highlighted the info, then cut and pasted the pathway info into "link" tags in a thread on the VW site. The thread had about 200 hits that night, so I'm sure that I probably overloaded someones bandwidth, or the moderators at the VW site closed it down due to someone being "offended".

What kind of fees are involved in running a small, personal website? I've thought about doing it, but when I tried to do research, the amount of information availble is staggering.

If you have an internet provider, and you obviously do unless you're doing all this posting from work, then you probably already have space for a personal website. I don't know any internet provider that doesn't give you 5-10 megs or so for a personal website. Check your IP's support page.
