After hearing all the praise of Mobil 1 synthetic I am gonna give it a try. Do they only make 1 kind I believe the stuff wal-mart had said tri-synthetic is that what I want and anyone ever hear of any trouble with using synthetic. Always used Valvoline so this is my first try of a different brand and first synthetic. THANKS

I've heard that they may cause some small leaks to be more apparent.  But I beleive that is with older vehicles.  Only bad thing I've heard about em tho.

All lot of people swear by mobil1.  It is true that switching to synthetic can make small leaks more appearant.  Synthetic oil doesn't "swell" the gaskets the way conventional oil does.

I personally don't drive enough or keep my vehicles long enough to justify the cost.  I just let Mr Goodwrench do all my oil changes for $19.95 and then the maintenance is all documented by GM for warranty reasons.

If I can't get 5 years or 40K out of regular oil then there was something catastrophically wrong with my motor that even Mobil1 wouldn't have helped...

I did a little looking around on the net after I posted this ? and I think I will stick with Valvoline. I looked a couple different oil testing sites and Mobil 1 didnt do so well.

Everyone has a different opinion on this subject. Ever notice there are more types of oil than there are political parties and religions?

My 02 is this: Always use the weight the owners manual recommends (5W30) and change it at the recommended intervals and the dino oil will work fine. Even the shade tree mechanics at the gas station down on the corner tell me if I even think about going to synthetic, don't do so until 30-40k miles. Even if you don't go along with this philosophy and change to synthetic at under 10k miles, you probably would never have big problems, it would just cost you alot more money over time for maintenance. I learned a long time ago that GM makes a pretty good vehicle. You can do alot of things to them and they keep going. In other words, you can wound the hell out of 'em, but you can't kill 'em.

Please share your sites. I've only read that best. I've used Mobil 1 for many years in all of my vehicles including my tractor.

I have to agree with Shaners....I've had four different vehicles totalling over 200k on them, and have never used Mobil 1 (or another sythetic), and have had no engine problems.  This is with 2 four cylinders (one Honda V-tech),

the Ford SOHC v6, and the 5.3 in my Chevy, all run in really cold upstate NY winters.   IMHO, stick with the manufacturer's weight recommendation and buy a good brand name, and i think you'll be fine, and save a couple of dollars instead of Mobil 1.  The filter, however, does make a difference...that you can hear if you get a poorly designed one...again, a good brand (Delco)and you're set.

Hello,

I have a 1988 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup with a 305 in it. I bought it in 1991 with 50,000 miles on it. I have used Castrol Syntec 5w-50 since then. I now have 389,000 miles on her and it runs like new and doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil. I have never done anything to it besides a few water pumps, starters, and alternators. It is long overdue for a timing chain though. Maybe I am just lucky maybe it is the oil. I dont know but I will continue to use synthetic till the day she dies. I also installed a jacobs electronics ignition in it at 50,000 which I love. By the way I am on my 3rd 700r4.    Good Luck.........Lumpy

I'm getting in on this thread a little late but...

I had a 92 GMC C1500 with 5.7 and an auto trans.  When I sold it in Dec of 99 it had 206,714 miles on it.  I had only replaced the water pump.  I never had any work of any sort done on the transmission except change the fluid and filter.  It was usually a half quart low when I changed it.

I talked to the guy that bought it last week,  It has 262,000 miles now and is still going strong.

I used Castrol 10W30 and changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles.  Synthetic oil may be better but for my money I got excellent service from the dino oil.

I think the main factor in the engine longevity equation is to use a good quality oil and change it and the filter regularly.

Happy motoring,

Beaux

I have 2 nearly identical Cutlass Supremes, one a 1988 model and the other a 1989 model.  I use Wal-Mart Supertech 5W30 in the winters and 10W30 in the summers.  The '88 has 187k miles, the '89 has 197k miles.  Both run like new cars.

I'll probably use Supertech in my truck too.

I do use Mobil 1 synthetic in my '90 Grand Prix Turbo, and that's just because it's turbocharged which puts higher demands on motor oil.

I did a little research myself before I switched over to Moble 1 and I only found 2 negitive things.  One was it might cause oil leaks on older vehicles, the other was the price of the oil if you weren't going to keep the vehicle very long.

Moble 1 must be pretty good stuff if Corvette's have it coming out of the factory.

Yeah, and my Wilderness A/Ts must be good because my truck came with them! haha!  j/k.  I also use mobil 1, I had it in my 60,000 mile 99 Grand am, and it ran great when I traded it in.
