Steering shaft replacement!!

Recommended Posts

On Saturday, I took my truck to the dealership so they can check a noise coming from the front suspension. I told them the problem and they said right away that it was the steering shaft, and that they could change it between mon-friday. Now I forgot to ask them if is cover under the warranty, the truck is a 05 CC w/16k miles on it mostly hwy :jester: I could think it could be cover under the warranty right?

Who can say? Some guys just end up getting the shaft re-lubed and never have a problem again. Some never have a problem at all. Just one of those things that varies by vehicle/shaft.

I got a new shaft about a year ago. That was after three lubes. The new one has already started to act up.There is a revised shaft that will likely be installed in your truck. Maybe that will be better than the older version.

It's an easy fix so if it goes again you can just buy a new one and put it in. Or just ignore it. Apparently, it doesn't make the truck unsafe, it's more a annoyance (sp?), especially when you've just dropped a bunch of $$$ on your new truck.

Good luck.

Tell em to replace it with the NEWER Style shaft.. The one that they would just regrease and send you off SUCKED! The grease pak wears out after a few 1000 miles..

The new style I just installed on my Tahoe is totally redesigned and uses a rubber coupler to keep the vibration down instead of grease..

I would have thought the 05's would have had the redesigned style but prolly not..

Got my relubed under warranty about 1.5 years ago. Just went back in last week and got it replaced with the new style shaft for free. I don't have any warranty left and they still replaced it for free with no pressuring at all. I'm sure they will fix yours up without a problem.

Mine was replaced at over 60K miles and warranty was up at 36k. I would go ask the dealership. I explained it was an ongoing problem and they had fixed it once under warrantyat 30K. Service manager checked with someone(I think regional manager) and then said no problem we'll put you on a new shaft free of charge. He said he has done allot of them under 60K miles but didn't know if my 63-64k was too much for GM to pay for it.

I would go ask your dealer. What could it hurt. I just asked the dealer "what can you do for me since it is a known problem. Free parts?? anything. And they said everything. I gave them an opportunity to meet me 1/2 way and they went 100%. I was shocked.

I made the call and Chevy agreed to replace the shaft if I cover labor which will be around $45 to $50. I made an appointment for next week!

Guys, You can use your normal grease to re-grease your steering shaft. I use Amsoil grease 6 months before i sold the truck and the steering was nice with no play! You should use grease that is sticky like the Amsoil. Good Luck!
