Defective Front Disc Rotors?

Back in April when I got my dually tires rotated, the service tech let me know that GM was having problems with 2500 and 3500 series trucks in cold-weather states like Michigan where I live. The problem was that the front rotors were rapidly deteriorating and exfoliating because of salt corrosion, etc. Only on these trucks, no others. I thought I'd also heard something on the radio about that time saying GM was considering a recall. This week I had to have the speed sensors replaced and my local mechanic showed me the inside surface of both rotors. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Really badly deteriorated, which was why my brakes were also pulsating, in addition to the speed sensor problem. Of course I had them replaced, but I was wondering if other users were having the same problem and whether there is any knowledge of a recall by GM. Not that a recall will do me any good now, but at least I can deposit my old rotors on somebody's desk if there is a recall.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure about there actually being a recall, but if there was, take your reciept in, and they should reimburse you.

I had to replace the rear rotors and brakes on my 2002 2500hd already. Only 18300 miles. The front brakes looking good on the outside but on the inside of the rotor they are terrible. Rust is coming off in layers. I think I'll be taking it in to the dealer soon.

Hi Dennis,

I have the same problem with my '02 GMC 2500HD. My mechanic did the brakes in January of '05. After the brakes were replaced, front and rear, the pedal was terrible. I brought the truck in for a check. He said the brakes were fine, but acted differently than original stock equipment. (Low pedal.) About two weeks agao, I brought the truck in for a transmission service and a preventive maintenance check/lube/oil at another service center. They said the truck would never pass inspection. Brake rotors were bad and U joints bad. I returned to my original mechanic. He couldn't believe how corroded the rotors were. And one rear rotor was cracked. He replaced the brakes in front and rear. He replaced the rear rotors. Now, the pedal is still low, and the ABS pulsates at very slow speeds when I am almost stopped (5mph). I think I need to have the front rotors inspected again and speed sensors replaced. Any thoughts on this? Thank you.

I also have a problem with the gear/shift indicator and odometer lights. They quit about the time my warranty ran out. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks!
