Lower Air Dam

I'd like to take off the lower air dam on the front of my truck. It really takes away from the front end ground clearance (2-3 inches). I do some minor off-roading, and sometime even the simplest stuff requires a better front approach angle. I don't want to find out when it's too late, that I should have taken it off!

 

From what I see, it's just a few plastic clips that hold it on. So it looks easy enough to come off. But, I read that it's part of the whole cooling/air circulation. Could removing this really have that much effect on the how well my engine cools itself?

You've probably read this, but the owner's manual details removal of the lower air dam for off-road use. Says that it is a-ok for off-roading, but that improper airflow can cause damage in permanent use, can't tell you if that last bit is true or not, though.

Yes, I did read that part in the manual, but wondered how true it really is? I can't really concieve how removing this lower dam would work against the engine cooling? If anything, lgin might even dictact the opposite, as it would seem more air could get in?

 

Thought? Experience?

Here's the deal. If you take off the lower air dam that is on the 05's you should also take off the plastic pieces behind the tow hooks that were added with the lower. Then it will be just like previous models and should allow enough air flow. That being said it might be a good idea to monitor your engine temp before and after just to be sure.
