motor done. Now what

Hi. I'm kinda new to this forum. I have a 1978 chev diesel to gas conversion. We had a 350 rocket in her and stuck in a 455 rocket. It sat for years and I started her up again. I was running okay but not good because of a bad carb, but ran reliably until last week. The engine blew down the road. I don't know what caused this and I was taking it easy too. Took appart the motor to find that the piston in cyl #2 shattered. All the peices are everywhere. The bore is scored and there is a chip in the crank. I looked around for another 455 but it is just so hard to find them now a days. I'm restriced to rocket motors since this truck used to be a diesel. I'm sixteen and am tired of driving a van to school so any advice is appriciated.

Vans are cool.  YOu can fit alot of ladies in the back of that van.  Turn it into the love machine.

And nothing makes a better love machine than a VW Bus. You can pick one up (that runs) for $500. That's what I drove in high school.

You can have a engine shop put a sleeve in the bore for you.

+1 Have the cylinder sleeved. As far as the crank goes, they shouldn't be too hard to find in the aftermarket.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards sleeving the cylinder. I know a guy who had it done in his mudbog truck for under $100. My main concern is the crank shaft. I'm looking toward building a 455 and the only parts that would be kept is the crank and block. O and by the way, there IS a lot a room in the back of a van.

Check Summit racing for a new crank. they should be able to get you a balanced one, or even a good enging shop will be able to help there.

Hey guys, I'm back. I know this is an old thread, but I was able to find another motor. I am currently building it and adding a edelbrock performer series intake, 750cfm carb and cam. Other parts include high volume oil and water pumps. I also had my heads redone and matched up to the cam to ensure a trouble free life. Maybe a little after christmas, I'll have the truck running. I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes. I guess, in a way, it was good for my motor to go, because now I will have an engine that will last, and be a little more peppy.

Sorry to hear that the 455 went out on you, the olds 455 was one of the best big blocks out there in my opinion. Had one in our old 71 Buick Riviera, the thing was bulletproof, a nice easy reving engine.
