More appropriately, it's called the Generation III small-block engine. The LS1 (5.7), LS2 (6.0), LR4 (4.8), LM7/L59 (5.3), L33 (5.3), and LQ4/LQ9 (6.0) are all essentially the same engines as they're all in the Gen III family. The Vortec engines in our trucks, while having the same block design, are cast iron rather than aluminum (with the exception of the L33 5.3 HO). Heads and intakes are different between the versions, but are interchangeable. It's not uncommon to take 5.3 heads and stick them on the regular LS1 to boost compression ratios (the 5.3 heads have smaller combustion chambers).
