4L60E case interchange

Replacing transmission in a '97 K1500 Suburban. It originally had the 2-piece case (non-removable bellhousing).

 

Will a '97-'99 4L60E transmission with the removable bellhousing interchange? Dimension data I have located indicate the later transmission is 1-5/8" shorter from bellhousing to the tailpiece (21-3/4" vs 23-3/8"). Mount location, transaxle or coolant line fitting orientation issues?

Okay, GM started putting the removable bellhousing 4L60E in vehicles in the '96 model year. The 1997 C/K service manual shows exploded views of THREE different cases - two of which I have described above. The third is also a removable bellhousing type, but the bellhousing looks much shallower. However, the GM service manual doesn't explain jack about them - no dimensions, no applications, no RPO codes. All drawings of the transmission have a 2WD tailpiece. Granted, this transmission chapter is primarily diagnostics/troubleshooting. It says to use the '96 unit repair manual for service/repair. So, since GM obviously was using both style cases in C/K vehicles for at least the '96 and '97 model years I want to know if there is an interchange problem. Or is there a GM application guide somewhere to tell me which vehicles ('96, '97 or other?) that came with the non-removable bellhousing?
