99 Silverado Third Brake Light Removal?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am a newbie to the forum and I need some help....

My brother-in-law has a '99 Silverado extended cab (old body style).  His third brake light quit working.  The light just doesnt' pop off.  It seems as though there is a thick rubber gasket around the base of the light.  Do you just peel the whole thing off?  Nothing happens when the two screws on the light are removed.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the site and forum, by the way!

I have a redesigned '99 model, and have had that high-mount light cover off.  I would assume yours is similar, but don't know for sure.

If it is, it should come off with a little elbow grease - mine didn't readily fall off either after 3 years.  If man-handling it doesn't help, you could try prying *carefully* and lightly with a screw driver, keeping a rag between the driver and the roof.  If it doesn't yield here, then I wouldn't force it - maybe call your dealer service dept.

As for why it is staying on all the time, I am not sure, but assuming you can get the cover off, it's prob. worth a check.  I assume the red part of the light is on, not the clear (being the cargo light). Make sure the bulbs are OK, and there hasn't been a leak and corrosion.  Might check the fuse as well. If ypou are unsure about the bulbs, get new ones - any auto parts dealer will have them.

I imagine if anyone else has run into this issue here, they will be better suited to comment and probably post, but good luck anyway.
