Sorry, I know I brought this up before on this board, but wanted to spark some further discussion...

 

These pictures were taken at startup and typical after a 40 mile freeway drive the previous day. The smoke is worse if I drive longer or let it sit for an extra day.

 

My Av was manufactured 08/01 and has a "T" engine code. From what I've learned and discussed on other boards, band-aids involve: PCV valve with smaller hole, PCV valve gap in valve cover, new valve seals and new valve lifters. Of these, it appears only replacing the valve lifters truly fixes the problem.

HOLY SH*T!!!  What has the dealer said about this.  I'd take it back and shove it where the sun doesnt shine.  Wow....I'd be EXTREMLY p*ssed off!

 

Let us know what the dealer does.  That does look like some internal motor problems to me....not just the PCV valve....  I had a 89 Firebird that had 120,000 miles on it and it smoked alot less than that on initial startup and it needed a ring job bad (i was very hard on that car).

WOW!!!  I'd be pretty PO'd at GM and the dealer.  That problem has to be fixed.  I'd get the factory rep involved ASAP...

 

I'd be embarassed to even start that truck if it was mine...  (no offense to you)

I'd take those beautiful pictures to the dealer.  Can the mechanic come by your house on his way into work and cold start it?  I'd DEFINATELY, get that fixed.  

 

BTW, how's your coolant level?  Is there a sweet smell?  How's your oil level?  How many miles do you have on the Av?

1)  Put truck in garage and close door.

2)  Envite GM Mechanics over to discuss problem.

3)  Lead mechanics to garage.

4)  Start truck and let it run for 2-3 minutes.

5)  Lock mechanics in garage and agree to let them out when the've come up with a proper solution.

6)  Get truck fixed by mechanics (or call ambulance depending upon the outcome of step 5)   :D

Well I have heard the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. After showing those to your dealer you should not have to say anything. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

You definetely have a valve seal problem! It only smokes on startup? I'd not only ask for new valve lifters, but new seals, and a 8.1 litre Big Block LOL  :D

Hey, I can relate!

That is how bad my AV was  (WAS)!

I was burning a quart of oil in 1800 miles, then they replaced the PCV with the "new" design, and no more smoke, and the oil consumption has gone to only one hole on the dipstick in 3500 miles!

Hope yours fixes as easy as mine.

That is EXACTLY what my 4.8L does.  I have a 2001 Ext Cab.

 

Only difference between you & me is that mine does not do it on a regular basis.  Mine has only done it say a 1/2 dozen times or so over the past year.

 

I don't know what to do to duplicate the problem.  (And I never have my camera handy)

Wow, that's a lot of smoke!!  I'd take those pictures to the dealer.  A picture is worth a thousand words.   :D   Best of luck and let us know what they do for you.

Both the owner of the dealership and the service director called me last week.  They've been very responsive and probably didn't know how bad it really was until they saw the pics (the owner even complemented me on them).

 

Got another call today and my Av will go in later this week for a new PCV valve and valve cover baffle mod (add sealant).

 

After the repair, I'll take the same freeway trip and snap pictures again the next morning.

On the bright side....As long as you keep topping it off you don't ever have to worry about changing the oil........

Just change the filter every once in a while  :D   But seriously, I hope they are able to fix this problem.....that is not acceptable...

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
