2000 2500HD violent shake in front end

I have a 2000 2500HD 4x4 and between 40mph and 50mph the front end shakes violently when braking. Above 50 and it is not to bad and below 40 it just about go's away. Any Idea's?? Is there a steering stabilizer in the steering on these trucks?? I need to get this figured out before something bad happens. Tires are balanced well and have the correct air preasure. Any help is appreciated...

I would say that if it only happens when braking, I would look to see if you have a warp rotor or something wrong in the brakes.

My 03 has a steering stabilizer, but that would not cause it to shake when braking.

Just some thoughts.

Hope you get it figured out.

Just had the same thing in my '01. Turned out to be the drivers side wheel bearing.

To check, jack up on side of the front end at a time and try to "wiggle" the tire front to back and then top to bottom. If there's play in it at all the bearing is either out, or on it's way, so replace it. The hub unit was about $160 through gmpartsdirect.com or $312 at the stealership and that was a couple of months ago.

Good luck!

I'd look for loose parts in the front suspension. Maybe tie rod ends, maybe an idler arm. A worn out idler arm will make the steering jitter at certain speeds.

I have this problem on my '98. Sounds like a warped brake rotor. Brakes fine til I get to 30-40MPH then it starts shaking pretty badly. Try taking off the front tires and turning the rotors by hand. If they grab every turn, there bad.

To properly test the ball jounts, you need to place the jack underneath the lower control arm on each side. That will take the weight off of the joint, and allow you to "wiggle" the wheel. If the steering knuckle shifts on the control arms, the ball joints are shot.

In your case, I'd check for warped rotors first, and also the wheel bearings. If it was ball joints, most likely you'd just get a clunk every time you hit the brakes (regardless of speed).
