I have 2001 2500HD 8.1L w/Allison Tranny. Some times (about once a day or so) the truck will just shut down, when driving down the road. No warning light or anything. it will restart and run fine the rest of the day after setting for just a min or two. I rented a code scanner to try to find the problem, but no error code where shown. has any one had this problem, Can anyone please help!!!

100% sure it's the crank sensor. The early ones all start cutting out eventually. You replace it with a redesign. Search under 8.1 and Crank Sensor in this forum and you'll find a ton of stuff. My posts will have good repair information.

Hello all ! New here. I have been following the posts on the crank sensors in the early 8.1's. I have a 2001 that about every other day will just quit going down the road and then will start right back up. Cousin's 8.1 did the same thing and he told me it was the crank sensor. I'm am pretty confident that is what it is, so I bought one today from dealer and was going to install it myself. Strolled into the local auto parts store and glanced through a Haynes manual. Doesn't look too tough, except the manual said anytime the CPS is disturbed some crank sequencing or reprogramming has to be done. This sounds like something only a dealer could do. Do I have to do anything other than replace the sensor? I know you have gone into this Haulin' 8.1 but I am having trouble finding the posts. Also, while I am here, I was planning on spending about 1500 on mods. I was thinking a volant cold air with scoop, granatelli MAF, a BBK throttle body, possibly a custom tune or programmer, granatelli near coil wire set and maybe a power tower. Money well spent or is there better ways to spend 1500 bucks. Brother-in-law just bought a powerjoke and when we we go camping I cant have him thinking he can pull away( not that he would anyway). He pulls a 31 ft travel trailer and I have a 35 ft fifth wheel. I have a 2001 Silverado 2500 HD obviously 8.1 with ally and 4.10 gears. Sorry so long- any suggestions would be appreciated.

My crank sensor is still ok (70K miles) but just replaced the cam sensor because it was triggering an SES message on the "message center".

Chevy 22, I would save your $$ on that stuff, with the possible exception of a Wester's tune. Aftermarket MAFs can be problematic with the PCM, particularly with an oiled air filter.

You don't say how heavy your 5er is, but I doubt your BIL will be able to beat you with his PSD unless it's chipped.

My trailer is 34' and 9000 lbs loaded, I have yet to get passed by anybody I didn't let go by. It takes a serious hill to slow me down to 60, I mostly run at 70 with the trailer.

Replaced the crank sensor yesterday (may 4th) what a pain. Could only take about 1/8 turns at a time on the 10 mm bolt even with a wrench "made" for it ( I did it myself). Old one came out quite hard but eventually got it by tapping with long screw driver and hammer- old sensor started to sererate so I would use caution. Also replaced fuel filter, don't know which one made the difference but seems to Idle and run smoother. Hopefully this will cure the dying while going down the road. Thanks for the advice Burbman! Not sure what I am going to do. I think my 5er is 8900 unloaded and he doesn't have a chip.... yet.
