03 Silverado w/4.3 - catalytic converter

My buddy has an 03 Silverado with a catalytic converter problem. Something is rattling in the converter itself and the there is a little smoke coming from the tailpipe. The check engine light is also on. The dealership won't cover it under the pollution control warranty which is 8 years or 130000km. Has anyone seen this particular problem????

I would get ahold of GM. Thats an emission issue and they have to provicded your no over the mileage limit.
