Temperature Gauge Faulty causing flooding

After 3 trips to the dealership and 2 to a local mecahnic, I'm stumped. I have a 2002 Yukon that runs fine about 85% of the time. Other times, the symptom is as follows:

1. The temperature gauge shows a sudden drop in temp from normal 210, down to 60-100 degrees.

2. If at a stop light or other idle position, the engine dies.

2a. If crusing at any speed, the engine stalls a little, sputters, and then back to normal.

3. Cycle will repeat itself randomly until you turn off the engine. Usually 3-5 times every 100 miles or so.

 

Anyone ever hear of this or have any ideas on how to fix it. All kinds of sensors, temp gauges, fuel iunjection have all been changed/checked, and diagnostics don't pick up anything wierd..even after 5 trips to the mechanic.

I am not an expert by any means, but it sounds like it could be electrical (Maybe the ignition switch). Do any other cluster gauges fluctuate when you experience the problem?

No other gauges act strangely. I've heard of unsolvable gremlins before, but I hope this isn't one of them.

Like Nash said an ignition switch is a good possibility. You need to check all grounds. I have found that usually when you have a problem that clears up when you turn the key off, it is most likely a module. Maybe a PCM. A switch or sensor very seldom is affected by a key cycle.

sounds like the coolant temp sensor is failing.

 

same shyt happened in my Cavalier, gage would drop suddenly and quickly every once inawhile and car would stumble now and then.

 

coolant temp sensor fixed problem.

 

in their infinite wisdom, it seems the General wires the gage to the coolant temp sensor, when you see something like that its a clue that the temp sensor has issues.

 

it wont set a code either, unless the sensor fails, as long as that sesnor sends some kinda signal back to the ECM, the ECM is going to say everything is OK.
