Engine Compression Test

Hi everybody,

I want to do an engine compression test on my van with a 5.0L V8. It has a distributor ignition system and I just wanted to make sure I have the compression test procedure correct, please correct me if any of my steps are incorrect, thanks.

Compression Test:

1- Make Sure Battery is fully charged

2- Remove all spark Plugs and air cleaner

3- Completely open throttle (WOT)

4- Remove ignition coil wire where it plugs into the distributor and ground the end that plugs into the distributor

5- attach compression gauge to spark plug hole and crank engine (How long should I crank the engine?)

6- Record compression readings

How long should I crank the engine during each reading?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

That's about it Lee, except having the engine at operating temp is better. Having a strong battery charger hooked up helps. You should crank the engine until the guage reading stops climbing. An engine in good shape usually takes 3-4 compression strokes to max out. The trick is to set the guage up so you can see it while cranking each time.
