new engine, hard starting

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I finally got my fuel problems fixed (the pump was bad) and I am trying to get my new engine started for the first time.

I initially timed it so that it was on the wrong revolution, so I set the crank to just before TDC, and reset the distributor 180 degrees. Now I go to crank the engine and it seems like it wants to start, but just won't. The starter kicks off and on like it started, but it just doesn't turn over. I am also getting black smoke out the tailpipe.

My buddy said it is normal to have a hard time starting an engine for the first time. Is he right, any ideas? Thanks guys.
